History ofFifthAvenue • FifthAvenuewasoriginallyafairlynarrowstreet, whichin 1908 expandedonthesite, justsouthofCentralPark, removingwidesidewalksbecauseoftheincreasedtrafficflow. ThefirstcommercialbuildingonFifthAvenuewaserectedbyBenjaminAltman, in 1896, boughtthecornersiteonthenortheastcornerof 34th Street. In 1906, hisdepartment "B. AltmanandCompany "wasthemainattractionofthequarter. Overtime, thisplacehasbecomealuxuryshoppingareathatattractstherichforitsluxuriousboutiques.
Themostimportantstepinthedevelopmentofthisfamousstreetbeganin 1916 whenahugemansiononthecornerof 72th StreetandFifthAvenue, JamesA. Burdenin 1893, wasdemolishedtomakewayforatwelve-storyapartmenthousewithacourtyard. Afterthisunprecedentedcaseinthequartercamemanyfamousbuildingsconstructedinthe 1920s byarchitectssuchasRosarioCandelaandJames ER Carpenter.

Farfromit, between 50th and 51th streets, isSt. Patrick'sCathedral, whichisamagnificentexampleofneo-Gothicarchitecture. Itsbuilding, designedin 1858 byJamesRenwick, Jr., locatedacrossfromRockefellerCenter, builtintheyears 1930-1940 intheareabetween 48th and 51st Streets. • AttheintersectionofFifthAvenueandFiftiethstreetisStPatrick'sCathedral - Catholicchurch, enteredintheregisterofnationalhistoricmonuments USA. OnJanuary 14, 1966 FifthAvenuehostedone-waytraffictothesouthof 135th StreettoWashingtonSquareParkandthetwo-waytrafficnorthof 135th Street. Intheareafrom 124th to 120th StreetparkavenuedividedMarcusGarvey. FifthAvenue - oneofseverallargestreetsofManhattan, inwhichhenevertrams. Instead, theavenuecruisedcomfortablyandexpensivebuscompany «FifthAvenueCoach». Veryoften, duringthecity'sparadesFifthAvenueclosedfortraffic. LongestandcrowdedprocessionisanannualparadeinSt. Patrick'sDay.
