  3. Basic Information • FifthAvenueisconsideredoneofthemostfamousstreetsofNewYork, whichishometomanyfamousbuildings, museumsandshops. StreetcrossesManhattanfromWashingtonSquareParkinGreenwichVillage, runsalongtheeasternborderofCentralParkto 142 thStreetinHarlemRiver. • PortionofFifthAvenuebetween 34th and 60th streets, isoneofthelargestandmostexpensiveshoppingareasintheworld, whichfeaturesshopsofallbrandsofclothes, shoes, perfumeandluxurygoods.

  4. History ofFifthAvenue • FifthAvenuewasoriginallyafairlynarrowstreet, whichin 1908 expandedonthesite, justsouthofCentralPark, removingwidesidewalksbecauseoftheincreasedtrafficflow. ThefirstcommercialbuildingonFifthAvenuewaserectedbyBenjaminAltman, in 1896, boughtthecornersiteonthenortheastcornerof 34th Street. In 1906, hisdepartment "B. AltmanandCompany "wasthemainattractionofthequarter. Overtime, thisplacehasbecomealuxuryshoppingareathatattractstherichforitsluxuriousboutiques.

  5. Themostimportantstepinthedevelopmentofthisfamousstreetbeganin 1916 whenahugemansiononthecornerof 72th StreetandFifthAvenue, JamesA. Burdenin 1893, wasdemolishedtomakewayforatwelve-storyapartmenthousewithacourtyard. Afterthisunprecedentedcaseinthequartercamemanyfamousbuildingsconstructedinthe 1920s byarchitectssuchasRosarioCandelaandJames ER Carpenter.

BarrioMuseum,MuseumoftheCityofNewYork, InternationalCenterofPhotographyon 94 thStreet, JewishMuseumat 92nd Street , NationalDesignMuseumCooper-Hewittnamed, MuseumoftheAcademyofArts,MuseumofAfricanArtat 110th Street,Theworld-famousMetropolitanMuseum, SolomonR. GuggenheimMuseum, AnewgalleryinNewYorkandGoetheInstitutefrom 82 thto 86 thStreet .

  7. From 40 thto 42 thStreetisthemainbranchoftheNewYorkPublicLibrary, oneoftheworld'slargestlibraries. Thebuildingwasbuiltinthe 1902-1911's thecompany "EndCarrereHastings." Famousbronzelions, mountedinfrontofitsentrance, wasdesignedbyEdwardClarkPotterandnamed 1930's "tenacity" and "Determination". • Atthecornerof 53rd StreetstandstheChurchofSt. ThomasoftheNewYorkDiocese, builtin 1914, designedbyRalphCrumandBertrandGoodhue. Farfromit, between 50th and 51th streets, isSt. Patrick'sCathedral, whichisamagnificentexampleofneo-Gothicarchitecture. Itsbuilding, designedin 1858 byJamesRenwick, Jr., locatedacrossfromRockefellerCenter, builtintheyears 1930-1940 intheareabetween 48th and 51st Streets. • AttheintersectionofFifthAvenueandFiftiethstreetisStPatrick'sCathedral - Catholicchurch, enteredintheregisterofnationalhistoricmonuments USA. ItisthelargestCatholicChurch USA.

  8. OnJanuary 14, 1966 FifthAvenuehostedone-waytraffictothesouthof 135th StreettoWashingtonSquareParkandthetwo-waytrafficnorthof 135th Street. Intheareafrom 124th to 120th StreetparkavenuedividedMarcusGarvey. FifthAvenue - oneofseverallargestreetsofManhattan, inwhichhenevertrams. Instead, theavenuecruisedcomfortablyandexpensivebuscompany «FifthAvenueCoach». Veryoften, duringthecity'sparadesFifthAvenueclosedfortraffic. LongestandcrowdedprocessionisanannualparadeinSt. Patrick'sDay.

ForMoscowisnotjustastreet, butasifaspecial "piece" ofthecapital, akindof "MoscowinMoscow" withitsownhistoryandtraditions. Lookofthestreetwascreatedinthefirstplacebyitsinhabitants. Arbat - hasalwaysbeenoneofthemostprestigiousstreets. Gradually, centuryaftercentury, tocreateuniquearchitecturallookofthestreetwithquaintoldmansionswithmoldings, balconiesandcaryatids, smallcozyalleys, delicatelanterns, stone-pavedroads. Arbatstartedtoliveitsownlife.

Thishasledtothedestructionofmanymonumentsof 18-19 centuries. NewstreetMuscovitesaptlynicknamedthe "falseteeth." • Arbatbuthasnotlostitscharm. Walkingdownthestreet, youcantouchthehistoryofRussia, becausethehistoryofalmostanyhouseintheArbat, eventhesmallandseeminglyinsignificant, intheend, ifyoustarttoexploreit, willcertainlyleadtothenamesandeventsthatareimpossibletoforget.

Thetheaterwasbuiltonthesiteoftheoldmansion, whichin 1941 wasbombed.
