ACCESS Advancing Collaborative Connections for Earth System Science Earth Science Datacasting PI: Andrew W. Bingham, JPL Objective • Empower consumers of Earth Science data with the ability to extract, from a data stream, precisely the files that are required to meet a predefined need. For example, “Acquire from various satellite derived data stream only the files that contain information about a wild fire in Southern California”. • Using the Podcasting analogy, extend the RSS feed specification to permit real-time subscriptions, download, filtering and data inspection. • Release a Datacasting Feed Reader for public download and configure feeds at various NASA data centers. Approach Key Milestones • Extend the RSS XML-based specification for Earth Science data streams. • Develop an email-like Feed Reader that handles feed subscription, filtering, file download and inspection. • Develop a set of tools that helps data providers to easily configure and deploy Datacasting feeds. • Build a directory for the discovery of feeds. • Formalize system requirements and definition 7/06 • Implement Datacasting RSS extensions 1/07 • Implement publishing tools and v1.0 of Feed Reader 5/08 • Implement Feeds at PO.DAAC and GHRSST 10/07 • Public software release and web pages 5/08 • Publish Datacasting in journals and conferences 7/08 • >35 publically available Datacasting feeds 12/08 Co-Is/Partners • Robert Deen (JPL), Kevin Hussey (JPL).
