  2. First Americans • This presentation provides detailed information on five First American tribes. • The material covered herein satisfies the following Virginia SOLs: • USI.3, USI.3a, USI.3b

First Americans • American Indians (First Americans) inhabited all regions of North America. • First Americans were resourceful. • All tribes used their surroundings to survive. • They used natural resources for food, clothing, and shelter. • The five tribe we will learn about include: • Inuit • Kwakiutl • Sioux • Pueblo • Iroquois • Click here for a map of the regions.

Inuit • Lived in area that is present-day Alaska and northern Canada. • Climate is arctic; temperature below freezing much of the year. • Used seals, fish, whales, and caribou for food. • Natural resources were seals, whales, and caribou. • Shelter was igloos in winter and tents in summer. • Modes of transportation include foot, kayak and dog sled. return to main menu go to credits page return to map

Kwakiutl • Lived in Pacific Northwest • Climate was rainy and mild; not too hot or cold. • Food was fish, deer, berries, and roots. • Natural resources were deer and wood. • Shelter was longhouses made of wood. • Modes of transportation were canoes and foot. return to main menu go to credits page return to map

  9. Sioux • Lived in Great Plains. • Climate was dry grasslands. • Food was buffalo, corn, and beans. • Natural resources were buffalo and sod. • Shelter was teepees made of animal skins. • Modes of transportation were horses, foot, or canoes. return to main menu return to map go to credits page

Pueblo • Lived in southwest, present-day Arizona and New Mexico. • Climate is desert bordering cliffs and mountains. • Food was corn, beans, and squash, a.k.a. the Three Sisters. • The primary natural resource used was clay. • Shelter was adobe, also called pueblos, made of dried mud or clay. • Modes of transportation were foot or horse. return to main menu go to credits page return to map
