Applying for Funding—Reality Check • Typical awards for students • Typical awards for nonprofits • Foundations and many other sponsors usually will not fund individuals directly but instead require that the applicant have 501(c)(3) nonprofit status • Your question—who or what is the applicant?
Options at Carolina to be Considered “Nonprofit” • Use Student Activity Fund Office (SAFO) as fiscal agent • If official UNC student organization recognized for University purpose, then UNC can be designated recipient • Work with an existing nonprofit organization as your fiscal agent • Incorporate as separate nonprofit organization
Fiscal Agency • find a nonprofit organization that will serve as your project's fiscal agent by receiving and administering the funds • increases your chances of securing foundation support • funding comes to the nonprofit to pay you to do the work • work with the nonprofit in planning project • plan carefully and document plans in writing http://foundationcenter.org/getstarted/faqs/section_5c.html
