MEXICO’S REGIONS(5) The country is divided into 31 states & the capital district Greater Mexico City • 1) Economic, cultural, & political center of the country(1/4 of country’s pop. Is here) • 2) Home of the country’s largest university, & greatest museums & theaters

Central Mexico • 1) Stretches northwest of Mexico City & across the Mexican Plateau • 2) Home of Guadalajara (country’ 2nd largest city), • 3) Agricultural center with many fertile valleys & commercial farms producing cash crops (crops grown for sale in a market)
Gulf Lowlands • 1) This is the Gulf of Mexico region between Campeche & Tampico, including Veracruz, a leading Mexican seaport • 2) Also includes the mountains to the south & the plains of the Yucatan Peninsula • 3) Rich deposits of oil & natural gas are the key to the region’s economy
Southern Mexico • 1) Includes the mountainous area south of Mexico City & the plains of the Yucatan Peninsula • 2) This is Mexico’s poorest region • 3) This is Mexico’s most traditional region with nearly half of this area’s population being Mexican Indians
Northern Mexico • 1) This large dry region has become very prosperous • 2) Monterrey is the great industrial city of the North drawing migrant workers from all over Mexico • 3) Modern infrastructure complete with good roads & phones that work
