East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System • Approximately 45,000 children; 80 % live at or below the federal poverty level • Almost 3,000 known asthmatics in the system; ~ 500 of them are on medication at school • Many other medically fragile children with other chronic disease in school
In the beginning…. Announcements are made by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) Immunizing the wrong groups of people to prevent influenza virus. Texas research project—20 years of work Clear evidence that we should be immunizing children (who spread the disease to everyone older and younger)
The backgroundwork begins… Early 2008: AAP recommendation April 2008: Superintendent hosts meeting with area physicians to discuss the potential of school-based immunizations for flu 2008 LA Legislative session: Call from Senator Cassidy to inquire of HCCS’ interest in the project
The pieces cometogether State of LA agrees to allow pilot project — early October 2008 Collaborators come together to discuss how to implement the project— early October 2008 Vaccine arrives — late October 2008 Project begins — November 5, 2008 and is on-going today
