  2. What is Mercury Poisoning • Mercury Poisoning- a disease caused by exposure to mercury or its compounds • Where is it found • It can be found naturally in the environment • Can exist in many forms • Elemental • Inorganic mercury compounds • Organic compounds

  3. If it is there naturally how is it a problem? • It becomes a problem when more then what naturally occurs is added to the environment • This can be done in many ways • Burning of coal and hazardous waste are just two of the major contributors

How does it affect Wildlife • The affects on Wildlife may vary depending on what it is • Birds: • Reproductive • Fewer and smaller eggs, lower hatch rates, and altered chick behavior • Behavioral • Less likely to hunt or seek out shade • Physiological • Tremors, difficulty flying ,and spinal cord degeneration

  6. How does it affect Wildlife cont: • Mammals: • Neurological • Impaired sensory and motor skills • Physiological • Weight loss • Overall affect on wildlife will be Death if they continue to live in the presence of extremely high levels of mercury

  7. Ways to test for it • Definitive way to test is to look at • Stomach contents • Kidneys • Liver

  8. Ways to control or prevent • Encourage clean energy technology • Reduce mercury air emission • Phase out products that contain mercury • Promote safe disposal of mercury
