  2. The search for entertainment • Movies blossomed in the 20’s, mostly made in- • Hollywood(Land) • East Coast (New Jersey) • Long Island • Silent Movies were predominant • Capitals invested about $2 billion on films • With the overwhelming reaction, theaters offered double features.

  3. Mass Production • Movies were organized by genre/type • Created stations to move the process of making a movie faster. • Writing • Costuming • Make-up • Directing

Movie Palaces • Major Film Studios created “picture palaces” • Example: Strand Theater in New York City • By 1920 there were over 20,000 of these palaces in the United States. • The Roxy Theater, which opened in NYC in 1927, was the largest of them all until Radio City Music Hall opened in 1932.

Grauman • Impresario Sid Grauman built Movie Palaces in Los Angeles during this time. • Grauman was called “Hollywood’s Master Showman” by many because he was very well known in this business. • He also created the tradition of stars in Hollywood placing their prints in cement in front of theaters, which eventually became tourist attractions • Stars like Charlie Chaplan, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and many more took part in this.

  8. Mary Pickford • “Queen of Hollywood” • She was a child star and the first star to become millionaire. • One of the most powerful figures in Paramount Studios. • Her and Douglas Fairbanks had a mansion in Beverly Hills which made the start of the movement of stars to west Hollywood.

  9. advancements • During the late 20’s silent movies started to fade, they started to make movies where actors/actresses had lines. • These movies were called “talkies” • Warner Brothers built the first sound studio. • This is where “The Jazz Singer” directed by Al Jolson in 1927 was made.
