  1. Peanut Weed Control Update - 2011(County Extension Agents) Eric P. Prostko Professor and Extension Weed Specialist Department of Crop & Soil Sciences The University of Georgia

  2. Topics for Discussion • Cadre Carryover • Palmer Control • Classic Update • Gramoxone Update • Changes in 2012 Pest Control Rec’s Charge • New Stuff • New Publication • Future Concerns

  3. Cotton/Cadre Carryover ProblemsWorse in 2011? **18.59” deficit rainfall

  4. What about 2012?Rainfall (in): June 1 – Nov 30Tifton Campus Conference Center in Month

  5. Cotton/Cadre Carryover ProblemsWorse in 2011? **9.76” deficit rainfall

  6. What about 2012?Rainfall (in): June 1 – Nov 30Statesboro in Month

  7. Cadre/Impose Rotational Restrictions

  8. If growers cannot or will not use Cadre…... • weed control costs will probably be higher • purple nutsedge will not be controlled • Dual Magnum ($10-14/A) but not as effective. Generic metolachlors are cheaper but may not last as long ($5-6/A). • Strongarm + Valor • Other POST herbicides (Basagran, Blazer, Cobra, Storm) are effective but have some weaknesses and no residual

  9. “Cadre-Free” Weed Control Programs • Program 1 • Prowl or Sonalan – PPI/PRE • Valor (3 oz/A) + Strongarm (0.23 oz/A) – PRE • Cobra or Ultra Blazer + Dual Magnum – POST • Program 2 • Prowl or Sonalan – PPI/PRE • Gramoxone + Storm + Dual Magnum – EPOST • Cobra or Ultra Blazer + Dual Magnum – POST • 2,4-DB as needed in both programs for sicklepod. Will likely need 2 applications.

  10. What one man can do, so can another! Sumter County - June 28, 2011 (Prowl + Valor fb Cadre)

  11. Pigweed Control is not impossible!!!! Common Reasons for Failure: 1) did not start clean 2) did not use a residual 3) residual did not get activated 4) POST applications are too late 5) short arms and deep pockets

  14. FL-07, GA Greener = No problems GA-06G and Tifguard = 7-11% yield losses

  15. Peanut Yield Response (lbs/A) to Classic @ 0.5 oz/A (2008-2011) aMeans are averaged over 2 site-years. bDAE = days after peanut emergence. cMeans in the same column with the same letter are not significantly different according to Fisher’s Protected LSD Test (P = 0.10). **When significant, yield losses ranged between 7 to 11%

  16. Georgia Greener Yield Response to Classic (0.5 oz/A): 2011-2012 DAE = Days After Peanut Emergence

  17. A New Formulation of Paraquat from Syngenta

  19. The influence of paraquat on peanut yield (lbs/A)1. 1Weed-free conditions. 2Pooled over four application timings (7, 14, 21, and 28 DAC)

  20. 2012 Peanut Pest Control RecChanges

  21. Spartan Charge 3.5L • FMC • Sulfentrazone (Spartan) @ 3.15 lb/gal + carfentrazone (Aim) @ 0.35 lb/gal • PRE @ 3-4 oz/A • Tank-mix with Prowl or Dual • Not on sands with less than 1% OM • Rotation Restrictions: canola = 24 months; field corn = 4 months; cotton = 12 months**; small grains = 4 months; sorghum = 10 months; soybeans = anytime; sunflowers = anytime; tobacco = anytime. • Same MOA as Valor (PPO) • ** some UGA research suggests that the crop rotation restriction for cotton should be 18 months.
