Family Crests • Family Crests, or Coats of Arms, date to the early Middle Ages because armor was making it difficult to tell people apart. • They decided to paint something on their honor to help with this • They were important in battle, but also worked kind of like team uniforms in tournaments • Over time, shield emblem designs became enduring symbols of their owners, and of their owners’ families
It started to become fashionable to have a ‘coat of arms’, so people hired artists to design them • They started putting them on tunics, saddle blankets, banners, tapestries, sculptures, architectural features, signs, advertisements, coins, jewelry, and stamps. • It became a thing for every one to do, not just soldiers • It also helped people recognize each other’s marks when few people could read or write.
