I. The Rise and Hold of Communist China A. 1949 – China becomes Communist 1. Mao Zedong a) tried to build perfect Communism - brutal repression of freedoms - collectivization of farms b) Chinese gov’t considers him a hero today

II. Arab-Israeli Conflict A. After WWII – World Sympathy for Jews 1. 1946 - U.N., U.S. and Br Plan - divide Palestine into Jewish and Palestinian Arab sections 2. 1967 – Israel seizes the “occupied territories” - Golan Heights - West Bank - Gaza Strip 3. Palestinians – no homeland = anger, terrorist groups - Hamas, Hezbollah 4. U.S. – strongly supports Israel
III. The United Nations A. 1945 – WWII Allies at the Yalta Conference agree to join UN “to save future generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime brought untold sorrow to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights….” 1. General Assembly a) reps of all member nations b) has power to discuss any question and recommend action be taken 2. Security Council a) decides what actions the UN will take b) 5 permanent members – US, Russia, UK, Fr, China – can veto any decision c) 10 temporary members chosen by General Assembly
