History of the Collective Action Group • A small network of people with disabilities, family, friends and supporters in Brisbane who collectively ensure that the vision and values of a good life are supported in practice in the lives of their loved ones…..
What is a Good Life? • Love • Purpose and belonging • Own home • Who enters one’s life • People to look out for you and be on your side • Fun, spontaneity, laughter and joy • Having your uniqueness acknowledged and appreciated • Treated as an individual
What is a Good Life? • Comforted in times of stress or sorrow • A sense of future • Routines, traditions and rituals • Having people in your life who truly know your heart – your secret self, dreams, fears and hopes • Good health and personal well being • Feeling safe and secure • Experiencing and giving intimacy and affection • Opportunities to grow, learn and develop
7 people and their families/friends/supporters 3 people with no family members involved People of different ages, gender and personal circumstances People live in their own homes or with family People with gifts, talents and strengths People who have previously been given labels of “challenging behaviour” People who have had negative experiences with traditional support services in the past Who are the Collective Action Group
Life Now for Each Person • Pursue own lifestyles and future. • Contribute abilities, gifts, talents, some of which may yet be undiscovered. • Have a range of lifestyle activities and friendships that are not prescribed or unnaturally restricted to segregated settings with others who have disabilities. • Have lifestyle arrangements that are highly relevant to what they need the most.
Personalised Approach • High degree of influence on the matters that affect life • Can direct resources where and when they are most wanted and most needed • Have the right to influence, refuse, imagine better, counter propose and suggest changes • Experience processes that are people friendly, • No bureaucracy, standardised responses, regulations, tedious management or regulatory processes.
Host Agency • Receive and administer individual and project funding • Provide all necessary employment documentation to Project Worker • Provide administration guidelines and requirements • Delegate authority to the Governance group to direct the project • Fulfil expectations of the Disability Services Act, the requirements of the Service Agreement with the funding body, the Disability Service Standards and the Quality Management System
Where to from here? • Establish recurrent funding for the project and move from project to ongoing personalised service for people in the group • Review Vision and Values for the group and people within the group • Continue to create good lives – “Near enough is not good enough”
