  2. 1. fallow – (1) plowed but not seeded; (2) inactive; (3) reddish-yellow • The fallow farm land looked quite desolate. • 2. coerce –to compel, force • She coerced her daughter into going to the grocery by letting her drive. • 3. punitive – inflicting or aiming at punishment • The punitive measures taken by school administration prevented the belligerent students from returning. • 4. precedent – an example that may serve as a basis for later imitation or later action • Barbara Walters set a precedent for all women reporters to follow. • 5. perpetuate – to make permanent or long lasting • People should not perpetuate the stereotype that blondes are ditzy.
