Current situation of ICT in Schools • nearly all schools are connected to the internet • information retrieval • communication • education needs multimedia • streaming and broadcasting as emerging technologies could be a solution, but • need broadband access • require wider media understanding

  7. AVD as a Pathfinder of eStream • AVD = Audiovisuelle Dienste • Sponsors: Ministry of Education Telekom Austria • 92 schools connected via satellite • applications: • media-on-demand service • tool for synchronous E-Learning

  8. Objectives • setting up of a video on demand service for the distribution of digital media to schools • creation of interactive, digital learning environments as e.g. digital tv using streaming media

Specific tasks • to test and evaluate the added value • promote interactive learning • enhance the use of media in class room • to develop support services for schools • exchange mechanism for media between countries • to network projects • to promote awareness and better understanding of the potential

Specific objectives • to test and evaluate the added value on different teaching approaches and didactical strategies using streaming media in classroom in different eLearning contexts (didactical scenarios) • To develop support services for schools • to network projects, experienced actors and institutions in Europe in order to create synergies • to promote awareness and a better understanding of the potential for educational applications of streaming media

Activities and Products 1 • collection and analysis of existing streaming media projects, initiatives and experiences • evaluation of the pedagogical effectiveness and the organisational impact of using streaming media, by involving the schools participating • research study on the added value on the learning process

  17. Activities and Products 2 • A physical demo-site in Greece • A virtual demonstrator of a multilingual video on demand and streaming service • development of a series of working demonstrators • development of strategies for the large scale deployment of Streaming media

Activities and Products 3 • online utilizing service - help desk, guidelines, FAQ, case studies and training materials • online information, exchange and discussion forum • development of a blueprint for the exchange of streaming material in Europe together with a paper on forthcoming standards

Key Issues • to exchange educational media in a transnational way without producing new media for each language and country • to go beyond conventional broadcasting of a lecture or showing educational media in classroom • Interactive and self-directed use instead of passive consumption • to offer possibilites for interaction (questions – answers, usage of parts of media,...) • to offer added value through the special didactical preparation of media

  23. Streaming and broadcasting technology offers the possibility to move from passive consumption of media by the entire class to active work with media by each individual student.
