How Do I Gain My Parents’ Trust? You will not get all the adult privileges you are looking for until you prove to your parents that you deserve those privileges. ________________________ It helps when they know who you’re hanging out with and where you’re going. If you’re running late or your plans change, let your parents know. It only takes you a minute to ease their minds, and to make yourself look pretty responsible at the same time. ________________________ What pushes your parents over the edge? Leaving dirty dishes in the sink? In fact, think of the top five things that drive them nuts and consider eliminating all the five behaviours from your life. If you do so, your parents will probably cut you a little more slack when you mess up in some other way. They may think, “Well, Joe accidentally broke the CD player when he was playing carpet hockey in the living room—but on the other hand, he hasn’t left his breakfast dishes in the sink for a week. He’s trying. Maybe I shouldn’t ground him for life.” ________________________ When you break the rules, you almost always know you’re doing it. Whether it is as little as snacking before dinnertime or as big as sneaking out after curfew, you probably choose to ignore the rules every now and then. If you want to build a stronger relationship with your parents, the first thing you need to do is to admit you were wrong. For example, “I know I’m not supposed to swing from the ceiling because it’s dangerous. I’m sorry, and I won’t do it again.” Start proving yourself trustworthy and reliable today, and you’ll gain your parents’ trust in no time. Reading and Writing Read the passage with these questions in mind. 2 1. What did the author want to do after graduation? 2. How did the author’s parents support him when he was refused by Montgomery Ward store? Look on the Bright Side of Life “Everything happens for the best,” my mother would say whenever I faced disappointment. “If you persevere, one day something good will happen. You’ll realise it wouldn’t have, if not for that previous disappointment.” Mother was right, as I discovered after graduation in 1932. I wanted to work in radio, then become a sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and tried every station—getting turned down everywhere. Then I returned home to Dixon, Illinois. There was no radio work in Dixon, but my father said the new Montgomery Ward store wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. I’d played high-school football, so I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn’t hired. My disappointment showed. “Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The programme director Peter MacArthur said they had already hired an announcer. My frustration boiling over, I asked aloud: “How can a fellow become a sports announcer if he can’t get a radio job?” I was waiting for the elevator when Peter called: “What did you say about sports? Do you know anything about football?” He put me before a microphone, asking me to broadcast an imaginary game. The last autumn, my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. After my 15-minute buildup to that play, Peter said I could broadcast Saturday’s game! On my way home, I recalled my mother’s words: “Everything happens for the best.” He wanted to work in radio and became a sports announcer. His father offered him a car to job hunt, and his mother reminded him that everything happened for the best.
