  1. Romans 16 21 Timothy, my fellow worker, sends his greetings to you, as do Lucius, Jason and Sosipater, my relatives. 22 I, Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord. 23 Gaius, whose hospitality I and the whole church here enjoy, sends you his greetings.

  2. 24 Erastus, who is the city’s director of public works, and our brother Quartus send you their greetings. 25 Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past,

  3. 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him— 27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

  5. Not Just GreetingsRomans 16 Some things appear worthless at first glance Others seem unnecessary Some leave us wondering, what was the point? These puzzles invite us to dig deeper to find some answers

  6. The first thing we discover is a practice of the early church They were called to be hospitable within the Christian community People began to abuse this practice Therefore letters began to precede the arrival of the Christian visitor

  7. Romans 16 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea. 2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been a great help to many people, including me.

  8. In this list of people worth of mention, service and gratitude… We see names that are Greek, Latin and Hebrew We learn that these ministry leaders were from diverse backgrounds

  9. 3 Greet Priscilla(Latin) and Aquila, (Hebrew) my fellow workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. 5 …Greet my dear friend Epenetus, (Latin) who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia.

  10. 10 Greet Apelles, (Greek) tested and approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the household of Aristobulus.

  11. There were both men and women Women in the center of ministry is nothing new

  12. 6 Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you. 7 Greet Andronicus and Junias, my relatives who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.

  13. Couples in ministry is also nothing new Paul worked with them

  14. 3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus.

  16. 7 Greet Andronicus and Junias, my relatives who have been in prison with me. 12 Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women who work hard in the Lord. (dainty and delicate)

  17. It seems there we even family teams Once again, as the Old Testament says, “there is nothing new under the sun”

  18. 14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas and the brothers with them. 15 Greet Philologus, Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas and all the saints with them.

  19. We can deduce some things from the list of names Many of the people named were slaves or freedmen We also surmise some great historical connections

  20. 13 Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too. Simon of Cyrene had to sons Rufus and Alexander

  21. One of these men made ministry possible for Paul 22 I, Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord.

  22. One of the men was baptized by Paul himself and served with him in ministry 23 Gaius, whose hospitality I and the whole church here enjoy, sends you his greetings.

  23. While many in leadership were of low status, there were those who were better off 24 Erastus, who is the city’s director of public works, and our brother Quartus send you their greetings.

  24. This is a diverse group of people Men, women, couples and teams Greek, Hebrew and Roman Slaves, freedmen and well-off To these, and the church at large, the apostle says…

  25. 17 I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

  26. 19 Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I am full of joy over you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.

  27. The church is to be wise and not let people divide it It is our responsibility to expose trouble-makers To not allow divisive people to become a powerful force in the church

  28. Paul then reminds the church that… Even as they suffer Even as they have questions Even though things are seemingly not going their way Jesus wins!

  29. 20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

  30. The letter ends with a doxology A prayer A blessing Closing thoughts

  32. Putting it all together Much of what we argue about in ministry is not new Most of what is new is the technology How we do ministry is not the sacred part – the sacred part is doing ministry in the Name of Jesus

  33. Putting it all together In sending Jesus to save the world God intended for the church to be diverse This is the reason we send and support missionaries The reason we seek to reach out to those of other tongues and nations,

  34. Putting it all together There is much we can disagree about in ministry We can spend our time arguing Our central ministry is Christ We do a great disservice when make it about other things

  35. We are a vary small part of the church We are part of a greater church with… Names we do not know Different languages and races Different worship styles But with one thing in common… The knowledge that Christ is lord and Savior

  36. We are the Federated Church. Our Mission is to… Seek Christ, Serve Christ andShare Christ.
