  1. HumidtropicsCRP1.2 Integrated Systems for the Humid Tropics Paula Bramel www.humidtropics.org

  2. Humidtropics considers the following needs of the poor and vulnerable • Secure access to and better management of natural resources. • Supportive and cohesive social environment. • Secure access to financial resources. • Access to high quality education, training, knowledge, technologies and information • Better nutrition and health. • Access to facilitating infrastructure. • Supportive policy and institutional environment. Derived from the Impact Assessment and Evaluation in Agricultural Research for Development by the Task Force on Impact Assessment and Evaluation, European Initiative for Agricultural Research for Development (EIARD)

  3. Goal To reduce poverty status and improve ecosystem integrity in the humid and sub-humid tropics Objectives • Increased economic and social returns for the poor and vulnerable people from enhanced agricultural productivity. • Improved biological and ecological integrity of natural resources. • Improved institutional effectiveness in supporting the poor and vulnerable people

  4. Humidtropics Systems Framework

  5. Humidtropics Conceptual Framework

  6. Strategic Research Themes

  7. Humidtropics R4D Impact Model

  11. Stylized multi-level model of socio-technical transitions influenced by CRPs

  12. Supportive mechanisms Partnerships • Humidtropics won’t work without it • Can’t deliver the outputs and thus no impact pathway • Increase efficiency and effectiveness • Need to be managed Capacity building • Better quality research and outputs • Increase efficiency and effectiveness • Strengthens partnerships • Improves adoption and adaptation Communication • Benefits same as for capacity building • Utilizes new communication technology • Develops Humidtropics culture and identity • Enhances reputation of Humidtropics

  13. Governance and Management

  14. accountability to the beneficiaries participatory and inclusive priority setting accountability to investors learning from experiences Monitoring and Evaluation Functions of learning and improvement will be central to M&E. It will be a continuous dynamic action-reflection-action process.

  15. Risks • Partners’ limited delivery competences: Different R4D partners involved along the impact pathway may not posses sufficient human, knowledge, capital, and infrastructural resources at the time of their essential involvement in delivery. • Narrow integration of Humidtropics in wider development contexts: Improvement of quality of life of the poor and vulnerable goes beyond integrated agricultural systems, and should fit and collaborate with existing institutions and new initiatives in governance, health, education, social services and infrastructural development. • Limited communication: Communication is often hampered by cultural differences, technology and expectations, which may cause conflict, limited knowledge and technology transfer, and lack of participation. • Limited links among research and development partners: There could be a risk if validated technologies are not scaled out because of inadequate linkages with extension and development partners. • Business planning: The Humidtropics program is complex and development impact will take a long time to achieve.

  16. strategic gender research gender mainstreaming allocation of gender budget building gender-based partnerships across the centers, programs and projects. Gender survey will use questionnaires to capture disaggregated data about gender profile and their views on, representation and participation, roles and rights, equity and equality, gendered impacts, mainstreaming and institutional change Gender Research Aims to improve the quality of women participation in research and development processes and reduce gender inequity

  17. Proposal development process This proposal and its revision are the product of extensive stakeholder consultations, teams of scientists from the partner Centers, and others who devoted significant time and contributed their knowledge and skills in support of the poor and vulnerable people in the humid tropics. Having tapped into the knowledge, experience and skills of so many stakeholders interested in the development of the Humidtropics it is essential to keep this momentum going with an expectation of further collaboration, especially when the program is implemented. The www.humidtropics.org site will be the main platform for information exchange and it is envisioned that more action area based participatory consultations will take place in both face-to-face and where feasible online formats. This also implies that the number of participants will exponentially grow providing a solid platform for further interventions.
