Why should I consider doing a Higher Education unit? • By completing a higher education unit in the College of Sport and Exercise Science at Victoria university you will: • Credit for first year unit – Individual Movement Activity 1 in 2015 • Credit for Units in CIII in S& R –Swim teaching qualification • CPR (relevant to those students who have not completed a 1st AID qualification in CIII in S&R)

  3. Dates and times • Thursday & Friday Nov 27/28 you will be involved in Preliminary on line training at your school and observations at a local pool • Monday to Friday 1-5 December you will be involved in pool based activities and workshops at Victoria University Pool

  4. Unit description The aim of this unit of study is to provide students with a sound theoretical knowledge of Aquatics, Water Safety and Aquatic related activities. In addition, students will be encouraged to obtain a high standard of personal excellence in the practical performance and instruction of swimming activity. Students will be introduced to the skills and methods of instruction of the four competitive swimming strokes and the two lifesaving strokes. Additional lifesaving skills will be addressed as well as different methods of instruction and feedback in the coaching and teaching of swimming and aquatic based activities.

  5. Unit description Students will have the opportunity to fulfil the competencies of the ASCTA Teacher of Swimming Certificate and the Lifesaving Victoria CPR qualification. Certification will be provided at additional costs. Please note: You can pass this unit without paying for the registration for ASCTA. This is a voluntary option that you have available to you.

  6. Learning outcomes • At the completion of this unit, students should be able to: • Plan, prepare, deliver and reflect upon appropriate and safe aquatics-based lessons and games for school students, specific populations and the general community. • Be able to identify in written form the basics of Swimming & Aquatic skills/drills and the role of Aquatics and other water-based activities within a school and community setting. • Improve and/or consolidate their own personal aquatic skills to pass the practical requirements of the ASTCA Swim Teacher

  7. Assessment – What do you have to do? Observation Task (1.5 hours of observed swim teaching and a written project ) Practice Integrated Learning Project ( This involves working with students in a pool setting to plan, deliver and then review the Aquatic Education classes you deliver) Practical Swimming Component Theory Completion (ASCTA DVD)

  8. What do I need to know You will be given a unit guide that will clearly document what you have to do and bring to each session.

  9. Some things about the unit: • Limited to one class of 20 • Classes at Victoria University Footscray Park campus will be from 9.00 to 2.30 • Cost (To be confirmed) • Thursday Friday Nov 27/28 Preliminary on line training and observation • Monday to Friday 1-5 December

  10. ASCTA Teacher of Swimming Certificate Refer to the handout. All those steps must be followed
