  1. Math FacilitatorsOctober 18, 2012 Welcome

  2. What is Fluency? Check all the equations that are true. 8 x 9 = 81 Notes during meeting: This is a PARCC task (see email for link). We chose it to help you discuss the meaning of “Fluency” with your teachers as it appears in the Common Core State Standards . 123456789 54 ÷ 9 = 24 ÷ 6 7 x 5 = 25 8 x 3 = 4 x 6 49 ÷ 7 = 56 ÷ 8

  3. How is the new site designed to support facilitators? Notes during meeting: Visit a unit page as you prepare for grade level planning. Choose one or two resources to highlight during planning. Choose a Professional Learning resource or two- have your teachers read before or during planning, then have a conversation during planning. If it’s getting hard to keep up with all of the grade levels, ask a teacher at each grade level to be the “website new reporter” and have him/her share additions/changes for a few minutes each week during planning.

  4. What about the replacement units??? Grades 3, 4 and 5……… NOTES during Meeting: You received grades 3 and 4 measurement during this meeting. 5th grade geometry is in it’s final stages and will be posted soon.

  5. Balance Scales What are the measurement tools required in grades 3-5 now? NOTES during Meeting: You MUST plan NOW for measurement. Look at the standards with your 3-5 teachers to determine what is needed. What could you borrow from other grade levels? From science kits? What could you ask parents to bring in? What can you get donated? Remember: students should CONSTRUCT a ruler as directed in the 2nd Grade Investigations unit. This is very important!

  6. App of the Month... NOTES during Meeting: I-Tunes U; great for facilitators. LOTS of mini-courses, videos and content designed to provide “on time” pd. Edmodo; this App (like Facebook) is great for class discussions, book studies and more. There are controls that you can set for safety. Very engaging for students! Jill Thompson

  7. Update from Accountability…

  8. Domains of Change The case for reform of school mathematics programs

  9. Party Favors Sandra is interested in buying party favors for the friends she is inviting to her birthday party. The price of the fancy straws she wants is 12 cents for 20 straws. The storekeeper is willing to split a bundle of straws for her. She wants 35 straws. How much will they cost? How many ways can you solve this problem?

  10. Changes in our Society • The World of Work • The Impact of Technology • Effective Citizenship

  11. Changes in Expectations • Increased necessity for math to meet the needs of more students than ever before • No longer is accuracy • measured by speed and • memory

  12. Changes in Students • American youth spend more time per year in front of electronic screens in their homes, than they spend in school • Most would give up their TV rather than the Internet • Cable TV took 25 years to reach 10 million subscribers, VCR took 9 years, and the World Wide Web took only 5!

  13. Six Useful Strategies to Bring About Change….. • Use classroom investigations on “How mathematics is used in the world of work.” • Students should interview their parents on what tools they use for math and when they rely on estimates and mental math

  14. Factoring Polynomials Makes the News? 3. Conduct an experiment to compare the amount of time allocated to math topics in the traditional curriculum with those same topics found in the news, business, sports and entertainment section of the local newspaper. Good match????

  15. The Red Birds and Blue Birds.. • Conduct a discussion at a faculty meeting on ways in which students are sorted at your school, based on ability, test scores etc… (what are some of the obstacles and implications of doing this?)

  16. Greatest Common Factor…(the number one choice for teenagers?) 5.Teachers can share student data that has been collected regarding student interests, the amount of technology in the home and the topics “covered” in their textbook. ¼ + ½ =

  17. 6. Take a close look at school and district results on released test items. Test Results

  18. 2,385 87 Civil War vs. Long Division

  19. More Performance Tasks http://commoncoremathtasks.wikispaces.com/Smarter+Balanced+Tasks http://www.smarterbalanced.org/sample-items-and-performance-tasks NOTES during Meeting: These were emailed to you as well. Find CMS Performance Tasks for grades 3-5 Unit 1 5th Unit 2 More to come!
