Did you know? • In 2012, AZ ranked 51st in per student spending ($6,683) per year (avg = $10,834) • AZ Ranks DEAD LASTbehind all other 49 states and the District of Colombia • Neighboring states CO, NM, and NV spend b/w $8,247 & $10,203 per student • AZ’s per CAPITA spending on education ALSO Ranks DEAD LASTin the country at #51 • What is scary is that these figures ASSUME that the Override is APPROVED… This is WELL Beyond School District Inefficiencies… THIS IS A FUNDING ISSUE! **All Statistics are extracted from the National Education Association’s “Rankings of the States 2012 and Estimates of School Statistics”
What is an M&O Override? • 2 Overrides currently in place, M&O (since 1989) and K-3 (since 2004) • 15% M&O Budget override on ballot combines and extends the two • M&O in final year of 3 year phase out, K-3 begins phase out next year • Most AZ school districts get money from state, federal and local • 50/55 AZ districts rely on override funding • If the override fails we loose the third pillar and the cuts will go deeper! Local = Override Money (money we have relied on since 1989 as part of the budget) FEDERAL X STATE LOCAL
November 2014 • 15% Maintenance and Operation Override • Will restore funding phased out in FY 14 and FY 15 • Beginning July 1, 2015 • Dollars for the classroom • Election November 4, 2014 • Estimated tax of $.40(approximately $145.00 for the average $354,000 home) • Combining the M&O and K-3 overrides Total Override: $18,846,218 New Dollars in FY16:$11,038,750
What Will This Cost Me? • A slight increase in homeowner’s property tax • Average Assessed property value of a home in SUSD is $354,000 • Override cost is $145 annually on average home • Currently paying $60 of the $145 • Which would result in an additional property tax bill of… • $7 A MONTH!!!
Think of good schools as an investment, not a cost. • Whether you’re retired, raising a family, or even an empty nester; good schools pay dividends • How? They raise property values. Academic studies show they boost values by up to 15 percent. • The Scottsdale Unified School District consistently gets top ratings. It’s just one of 18 districts - out of 228 in Arizona - to receive an “A” grade. • The district has a 91% graduation rate, one of the highest in the state. That pays economic dividends by lowering social service costs while helping the next generation contribute to society. • A quality education clearly benefits Scottsdale’s economy. A study by MSI, one of the nation’s leading economic modeling firms, found that every dollar invested in schools creates $11.60 of economic benefit for the community. • Good schools are critical to good communities. In 2011, Businessweek.com named Scottsdale one of the top five places to live. The article said our strong public school system was a primary factor. • Good public schools attract more than families. They attract good employers.
