  2. Birth and Death. • Born: April 19, 1787 • Birth place: New York • Death: 1837 • Death place: none.

  3. How Smith became deaf • Smith became deaf either from being born or a childhood illness.

  4. Where was Smith from? • Smith was from New York as a child and moved to Mississippi at the age of 11 or 12. • At the age of 34, Smith moved to Texas permanently.

  5. Why was Smith famous? • Smith was famous for helping Texas win the war against the Mexicans. • Known in the army as “ The Eyes of the Army”. • Smith captured General Cos.

  6. Family • In 1822, Smith married Guadalupe Ruiz Duran, a widow. • Children: Refugia, Josefa, Lucinda, Susan Conception, Gertrudes, Travis, and Simona.

  7. Treated as a deaf person • Was treated well in the army and was able to be a spy and scout for the Texas army.
