Solicitation 3: WiMAX expansion • Researcher-controlled 4G systems. • Several sites have made agreements to borrow spectrum from Clearwire (or other local carrier). • Emphasizes “multi-cell” sites to open up new research domains (handover, vehicular systems, etc.) • Engages transport-sector organizations: Ford Motor Company, metropolitan transit authorities, and the Michigan and South Carolina Departments of Transportation • Ivan Seskar (Rutgers WINLAB) acquires and configures Airspan base stations • Hongwei Zhang (Wayne State), KC Wang at (Clemson) and Giovanni Pau (UCLA) are all planning vehicular experiments with handover • Suman Bannerjee(U. Wisconsin Madison) is fielding a multi-vendor WiMAX network covering Madison campus and beyond • Morley Mao at U. Michigan is collaborating with NTT DoCoMoto focus on content management Selected Airspan WiMAX base stations for availability (commercial product, low cost), features (MIMO)and openness (documents and support); installations have started; expect to be on-the-air soon.
