  1. Making Waves Waves # 1 k.Wilkinson 2015 adapted from http://sciencespot.net/

  2. Answer the following multiple choice questions. • Which of the following energy does NOT travel as a wave? • Sound • Light • Earthquakes • Wind • How are sound and light waves different? • Sound has a wavelength, light does not • Sound can be measured, light cannot • Light travels through space, sound cannot • Light travels more slowly than sound

  3. The answers are ... • Which of the following does NOT travel as a wave? • Sound • Light • Earthquakes • Wind • How are sound and light waves different? • Sound has a wavelength, light does not • Sound can be measured, light cannot • Light travels through space, sound cannot • Light travels more slowly than sound

  4. Making Waves Waves # 2 K. Wilkinson 2015 adapted from http://sciencespot.net/

  5. Use the figures below to answer the next 3 questions. All pictures are drawn to the same scale. Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3 Figure 4 • Which one has the greatest amplitude? • Which one has the highest frequency? • Which one has the longest wavelength?

  6. Answers Are… • Greatest amplitude = Figure 4 • Highest frequency = Figure 3 • Longest wavelength = Figure 1

  7. White Light Waves # 3 K. Wilkinson 2014 adapted from http://sciencespot.net/

  8. Determine the correct answer. Isaac Newton thought light was white and found all over the universe. After conducting several experiments he concluded that light is a combination of different wavelengths. Which evidence supports his conclusion? A. light is white. B. light is found all over the universe. C. light separates into colors in a prism. D. light can travel very rapidly through space..

  9. Answer is…. Isaac Newton thought light was white and found all over the universe. After conducting several experiments he concluded that light is a combination of different wavelengths. Which evidence supports his conclusion? C. light separates into colors in a prism.

  10. ROYGBIV Waves # 4 K. Wilkinson 2015 adapted from http://sciencespot.net/

  11. Think about it… Why does white light separate into colors by a prism?

  12. Answer Why does white light separate into colors by a prism? White light is made up of all the colors of the rainbow. When white light goes into the prism different colors of light are refracted by different amounts. Each color travels through the medium at different speeds!
