  1. Working arrangements in the workplace When you start a job, you will be given a contract of employment which lays out your working arrangement

  2. What 4 main things do you think would be included in a contract? e.g. F_ _ _ T_ _ _ _ or PT Type of employment TERMS & CONDITIONS * Others – notice periods, disciplinary procedures and grievance procedures

  3. Types of employment Permanent employment: • When there is no limit on the length of time a worker is employed. Temporary employment: When employees are employed for a limited period. Full-Time employment: When employees work the full working week. The European Union working Time Directive suggests that full-time work should not be more than 48 hours per week Part-Time employment: Only work a proportion of the working week e.g. Less than 30 hours

  4. Hours of Work Contract type 1: The Ford car factory is open 24 hours in order to meet productivity demands. Ashley works from 8am to 4pm and then his friend Lewis at jumps in from 4pm to 12pm, Matt then takes over at 12pm all the way through to 8am when Ashley comes back. What kind of work is this known as? Contract type 2: James is a keen Golfer, he works from 8am to 7pm on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday, on Thursday he works from 9- 4pm and is then able to take Friday off to practice his swings. What kind of contract does he have? Contract Type 3: Nick finds that the demands of his job as a Paramedic often require him to work beyond his usual hours. When this happens he has the choice to get paid a slightly higher wage to stay on or gets it back in lieu. What are these extra hours known as? Bucky has been working hard all day, he suddenly realises how hungry he is feeling and that his eyes are quite tired from being on the computer all day – what is he contractually entitled to which would help here?

Pay & Benefits • Every contract of employment states the pay an employee will get (what is the difference between a wage or salary? week vs. month) • A bonus or commission may be paid in addition • to this. Job example: • Benefits are also mentioned in the job contract. They include the number of holiday days and may also include things like health insurance, car, profit share, dividends.......

To improve the quality of their products i.e. Employ more full time staff in the research and development department 3. To be more competitive 4. To introduce new technology – faster more efficient machines, staff to run the website, e-mail vs. letter
