Four Different Types of Sentences • Sentences are often classified according to their purpose. • There are four purposes that they may have: • To make a statement • To give an order or make a request • To ask a question • To express strong emotion
Declarative Sentence • A declarative sentence makes a statement. • Ex: I have four pets. • Ex: Two of my pets are dogs. • A declarative sentence ends with a period. • This is the most commonly used sentence in speaking and writing.
Imperative Sentences • An imperative sentence gives a command or makes a request. • Ex: Get off the table! • Ex: Please leave the cats alone. • An imperative sentence ends with either a period or an exclamation point depending on the strength of the command. • In imperative sentences, the subject is understood you.
Interrogative Sentences • An interrogative sentence asks a question. • Ex: How many pets do you have? • Ex: Do you like rottweilers? • An interrogative sentence ends with a question mark.
Exclamatory Sentences • An exclamatory sentence expresses strong emotion. • Ex: She is such a beautiful dog! • Ex: Don’t chew on that! • Ex: What do you think you’re doing! • Exclamatory sentences end with an exclamation point. • Note that sentences are not only exclamatory, but can also be declarative, imperative, or interrogative. • In writing, exclamatory sentences should be used sparingly, or they lose their effectiveness.
