GMS: Diverse and globally important biodiversity Photos: WWF, 2011.
GMS: Period of prosperity • Underpinned by its natural capital • Supported by GMS Economic Cooperation Program
Price of economic growth: Environmental degradation • Forest/Habitat loss • Species extinction • Water quality declining • GHG emissions rising
Ecological degradation threatens future prosperity • Food, energy, and water security under threat GMS energy demand
Importance of regional responses for ecosystem management • Ecosystems transcend administrative boundaries • Threats to ecosystems originate beyond administrative boundaries • Opportunities to sustainably manage ecosystems require regional responses
1.9 m tCO2e (traffic) Sustainable financing – one option Offsetting GHG emissions from infrastructure by supporting A/R in conservation landscapes – Carbon Neutral Transport Corridors Sequestration potential from planned regeneration (2011 - 2020) Carbon footprint of NSEC 2011 - 2020 ~ 0.2 m tCO2e Current and planned regeneration within the BCI sites in Xishuangbanna could offset 12% of emissions from NSEC . Capturing the offset cost for 30% of emissions from NSEC would fund 3000 ha of reforestation for multiple benefits including soil conservation, water regulation and carbon sequestration.
Challenges for sub-regional ES Management • Countries have varying degrees of response capacity • Institutional and legal regimes for trans-boundary ES management • ES assessments and information • Financial and other incentives
The GMS Core Environment Program • CEP-BCI – a regional platform for improving environmental management in the GMS • Led by GMS Working Group on Environment (GMS Government environment ministries)
