In addition to teaching courses in Software Engineering, Database Systems, and Information Security, Professor Early actively engages undergraduates in scholarly research that is changing the public face of our institution. In particular, he is involved in organizing the development of software for Harborfest project, which will expedite and automate arrangements for this large-scale event; and the Gaia project, which will be used on a major astronomical satellite for the automatic classification of pulsating stars. Furthermore, Professor Early has presented his research at several national conferences on computer science education and network security. Professor Early is an amiable, good-natured person, and a remarkable role model for the students of SUNY Oswego.

Updates on Committees • Bake Sale • Siobhan has requested a few dates for a Bake Sale • Once she obtains confirmation from Campus Life she will send out a doodle to look for volunteers to sit at the table and will send out a google doc to get volunteers for baking. • More information will come in the next few days, watch for an email. • Volunteer Service • Kelly Bayne has stepped down from chairman. • MUST find a new chairman • This is a great way TO GET INVOLVED • Need to get involved with Salvation Army

  6. Other Updates • Adopt A Soldier • Katlinhas contacted her soldier asking for a picture and a short bibliography. • Once she obtains some information, she would like to set up a table in Campus Center to raise some money for them. • More will be available hopefully by the next meeting • Relay for Life • Mark will be setting up a team • Look for an email to join the ODK team

  7. Clarifications • When setting up an event, it MUST be approved by the officers first • Please do not announce it will count for ODK hours to all the members until its approved • It was mentioned last meeting that we would count hours you do in other clubs towards your ODK requirement • The E-Board has decided that the 7 hours will only be counted for ODK functions. • There will me MANY opportunities within the next few weeks.

  8. ODK FUNDRAISER Location: Greene’s Ale House Date: Friday, April 27th, 2012 Time: TBD

  9. Purpose: • To raise enough funds to maintain the viability and sustainability of the Oswego circle of Omicron Delta Kappa. • Right now, we are in a budget pinch, and the various fundraisers such as Friendly’s and different bake sales are just not what we need in terms of providing enough cash flow for the organization.

  10. Why Greene’s Ale House? • I know the owner of Greene’s personally, and he has thrown successful fundraisers for various charitable causes. • Although Greene’s is a bar, our fundraiser IS NOT predicated on us drinking alcohol. Part of the ODK ethos is maintaining a “sound mind and sound body.” It is merely a means to end, however, that does not mean that if you are 21 years old, you will not be able enjoy a drink.

  11. How are we raising money? • What we are going to do is solicit donations from various business around Oswego. Since we are a leadership honor society and not a social fraternity/sorority, businesses will be keen to donate because are main purpose as an organization is various charitable causes such as Adopt-a-Soldier, Relay for Life, and the Salvation Army. • We will ask the different businesses around Oswego to donate a signature product or service. There are a wide variety of businesses around Oswego. They include fine dining, pizza shops, flower shops, barbershops, you name it, Oswego probably has it.

  12. Fundraising Cont’d • After we have successfully solicited donations from around Oswego, we will package them together to make gift baskets to be auctioned off at Greene’s on the day of the event. • Possible gift baskets include a package of gift certificates to the different pizza shops, a taste of Italy, were we package together sauces from Canale’s and a gift certificate to Vona’s, a $25 dollar gift certificate to a barbershop redeemable for a haircut and a hot shave, the ultimate Oswego sports fan basket with gift certificates to the various sports bars around town etc.

  13. Other ideas for the auction • A signed hockey jersey from the 2012 Oswego State Lakers Men’s hockey team. This will be a highly desirable item, especially if the team goes on to win the National Championship. The cost would be 70 dollars to purchase from the Campus store. I don’t expect the store to just give one away. But it is an investment, and we could double or triple our money especially if the team goes far. I’m friends with a couple of the guys on the team, and they would be more than willing to help us out.

  14. Another idea • A lithograph or college pennant signed by notable alumni ESPN’s Steve Levy and Linda Cohn, and NBC’s Al Roker. • This might be a long shot, but a banner or pennant literally costs 5 to 10 dollars, we have about 9 weeks until the event, it wouldn’t cost that much to ship out to Connecticut or New York, and it would be highly profitable. A conservative estimate would be that we easily would triple or quadruple our investment. • We would need to contact each one in advance, telling them about our organization, our purpose and mission statement. As long as we do this, I am sure that each one would be more than happy to do this for us because we are involved in different charitable causes. It would literally take them less than 20 seconds to sign.

  15. How the Fundraiser and Auction Will Be Set Up • We haven’t decided on a time, and we need to figure out what would work best. I was thinking running it from 7 to 12 PM. • We would be charging three dollars at the door for the event. I haven’t decided whether it would be better to let ODK members in for free. Three dollars is a reasonable price for an event like this since there will be live music and a band playing. (More on that later) • We will have to discuss this as a group. We will advertise this event at the different locations that donate and on campus as well.

  16. How the Fundraiser and Auction Will Be Set Up Cont’d • We will have different tables set up, showcasing each basket. • For the products and services from the local businesses, we will charge 1 dollar for a raffle and an arms length for 5 dollars. This might not seem like it would be that profitable, but remember, if we advertise this right, we can easily fit a hundred people into Greene’s. • If patrons just want to drop by for an hour or two, we can have them sign the back of their raffle ticket and delivery the prize to them.

  17. How the Fundraiser and Auction Will Be Set Up • For the big ticket items such as the hockey jersey and pennant, we can charge five dollars a ticket. People who live in Oswego are rabid Oswego State Laker fans, and they would be more than willing to pay five, ten even twenty dollars just for a chance to win an autographed jersey especially if the team wins the National Championship. • The same holds true for the notable alumni signed banner.

  18. The Band • A local college band, Mick Van Rick, will be playing at the fundraiser. The band consists of Sean McNamara as lead guitarist, Hank Van Boxmeer on the drums,Taylor Ricks on the bass and Everett Hook on the trumpet/keys.

  19. Logistics • We will have an hour or two where patrons can buy raffle tickets for the various gift packages. Each item can be displayed on tables or booths throughout the restaurant. We will need members of ODK to volunteer to man the tables. • The band will start playing at 9 o’clock, and at fifteen minute intervals, we will raffle off a gift package. We will probably end up doing a last call for the different packages for any late arrivals. The night will culminate with the raffling off of the OSU hockey jersey. • We will also be running a 50/50 raffle as well.

  20. How Much Money Can We Expect to Make? • The owner of Greene’s has been organizing these types of fundraisers for years. I asked how much money we could make, and he told me conservatively we could make at least a thousand dollars, but it all depends on how each member of Omicron Delta Kappa works together as a team. • He believes our potential profit earnings for an event like this could be unlimited depending on an effective marketing strategy, what type of gift baskets we bring in, and ultimately, how each of us works cohesively as a team. • There will be three phases in order to execute a successful fundraiser.

  21. Phase 1: Planning and Logistics • We will need a group of people to solicit donations from the various businesses across Oswego. -This group will have to meet up, list all the targeted business and go to each business to solicit a donation. -It is key for the members of this group to give their name, the name of our organization, our purpose as an organization, and finally a request for a donation. -Businesses will be keen to donate because our mission is to be leaders and serve our community through different acts of charity.

  22. Phase 1 Cont’d • This group should meet prior to Spring Break to get a list of targeted businesses. • This group should start soliciting donations the week after Spring Break. • We will want all donations finalized by Wednesday, April 25th. • Also we will need a few students to design an appropriate flier marketing this event to be handed out to the various businesses that do extend a donation and to be placed throughout campus. • This ultimately serves two purposes: 1) to market the event and 2) to get the word out about the SUNY Oswego circle of Omicron Delta Kappa. • People in this group will get hours credited towards the seven needed for induction into ODK.

  23. Phase 2: The Day of the Event • We will need people to volunteer for an hour or two to help set up and run the tables with the gift baskets and for the 50/50 raffle. If you can spare an hour of your time to help out it would be greatly appreciated. Because the event is after induction, unfortunately, we cannot count these as ODK hours. • However, for those elected as officers, this might be a perfect time to get a taste of what it takes to work and run a fundraiser of this magnitude.

  24. Phase 3: The Conclusion • After the event is over, we will need volunteers to write each business to thank them for their valuable contributions to make an event like this possible. • It’s important to thank each business for their specific contribution and mention how much money we raised at the event, and how we will use it for our charitable work.

  25. We Need Each of You • I will function as project manager for this event and help coordinate each aspect and phase. Ultimately, I cannot do this without your help. For an event like this to succeed, we need each of you work together for a common purpose. • A common trend that I have noticed that has actually hurt ODK at Oswego, and the reason we are in the financial bind that we are currently in, is a tremendous level of apathy for members once they get inducted. I ask each you to take pride in the organization that you have been select to be a part of. It is a special honor, especially when one considers the size of Oswego’s 8,000 person undergraduate enrollees and the fact that only roughly 40 people a year are inducted. You have been selected and distinguished by a faculty member for your leadership abilities.

  26. Now It’s Time to Get to Work. Let’s Go!
