  3. Economy • Pharaoh collected crops to feed his family • Pharaoh took taxes on all materials made in Egypt

  4. Government • Collected taxes • Served as judge • Shared floodwaters with irrigation • Local leaders were governor • Governors reported to pharaoh • Built pyramids • Created laws • Raised money for projects

  5. Why did local leaders revolt? • Local leaders did all the work. • The pharaoh’s projects took too long & cost too much money

  6. Requirements to be president • 35 years old • A natural born citizen • Lived in the US for 14+ years

  7. How long? • Presidents can serve 4 years at a time. • The President can serve 2 terms = 8 years

  8. Government (laws) • Approve laws • Refuse to sign laws = veto • Propose bills, but cannot write them

  9. Military Powers • Authorizes the use of troops without declaring war • To declare war the president must get the approval of Congress

  10. Duties • Party Leader – helps people get elected • Commander in Chief – controls all of the military • Chief Executive – administers the laws, carries out the laws

  11. Duties - continued • Chief of State – represents US at events, promotes US values • Chief Diplomat – interacts with foreign leaders • Chief Legislator – voices his opinion about laws with speeches
