  3. Italian Unification • Count Camilio di Cavour – Prime Minister of Sardinia • Allied with France in Crimean War to defeat Austrian conservatives • Appeal to Italian nationalism • War with Austria (1859)

  4. Italian Unification • Giuseppe Girabaldi – General in Naples Kingdom army – liberal, but dreamed of a united Italy • 1860 invasion of Sicily to end riots • Developed belief that Papal States were keeping Italy divided.
