United States Military Academy West Point, New York Leadership at “The Point” Good Morning! Welcome Back!
THE WEST POINT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM What Is It? What Are The Philosophical Underpinnings? Why Is It So Effective? How Can These Principles Be Of Value To You And Your Organization?
The Creed DUTY HONOR COUNTRY
United States Military Academy Mission "To educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army."
Four Elements Moral Ethical Physical Military Academic “Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Make me do and I understand.” Confucius
Academic “The general who wins The battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought. The general who loses makes but few Calculations beforehand.” Sun Tzu
Academic • The core curriculum incorporates 31 courses equally balanced between the arts and sciences. It provides the foundation for the academic program and the broad knowledge necessary for achieving success as a commissioned Army officer. The core curriculum also provides an opportunity for specialization. • There are currently 22 optional majors and 25 fields of study. They cover virtually all of the liberal arts, science and engineering disciplines one would expect to find in highly selective colleges.
Military “A leader leads by example not force.” Sun Tzu
Military • The Corps of Cadets is organized as a "brigade" under the command of a Commandant of Cadets. The commandant is a brigadier general in the U.S. Army. • There is both an officer and a cadet "chain of command," providing many opportunities to practice and develop personal leadership skills
Physical • Through athletics, every cadet competes and is challenged at the highest level of physical ability. It is an opportunity to develop self-confidence and self-discipline, a sense of fair play, team spirit, and the capacity to think and act under stress. Thus, athletics serve the larger mission and purpose of the Military Academy. “In general, any form of exercise, if pursued continuously, will help train us in perseverance.” Mao Tze Tung
Moral - Ethical • Moral-ethical development is central to the West Point experience. It is integral to the academic program and imbedded throughout the military and physical programs. • The Honor Code -- "A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do"—sets the minimum standard for integrity, but the Military Academy seeks to inspire adherence to the spirit of the code. We want to develop leaders of character, men and women who revere honesty, pursue justice and practice respect for others and their property. Cadets are guided by the timeless creed "Duty, Honor, Country" with "Respect" and "Integrity" as the central fundamental values. “He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks.” Sun Tzu
