Priscilla, 1969 By: D Prater
Joseph Szabo is known for his pictures of teenagers. He taught art and photography at a high school on Long Island. Szabo wanted to break the barrier between tutor and pupil and started to photograph his students in the classroom and eventually got their trust and followed them in their social life. This is a 10 year old girl at the beach, spending time hanging out.
First reaction When I saw this photo for the first time I thought, “Why is this 10 year old girl smoking?”
PATHOS The emotional appeal I found in this image is disgust and concern. I ask my self, “Why would anyone let their 10 year old child smoke and go to the beach by her self?”
Logos The reason he took this picture was to show what America was evolving into. In1969 many younger people were smoking and many parents did not care.
Audience The audience of this photograph is intended to be parents because its trying to show what children do when they are by themselves.
Focus The main focal point of this picture is Priscilla smoking a cigarette. This can be seen by how the artist pixilated or blurred the background.
Why black and white? It is black and white because if it was in color the real colors of the scene would have a more happy tone and this picture is meant to be serious and meaningful.
