  2. Intro Lk. 10:25-29 25. And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26. And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?" 27. And he answered, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." 28. And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE." 29. But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" • Lk. 10:25-29 • A lawyer (scholar of the Law) asked Jesus how to inherit eternal life and Jesus had him answer his own question from the Law (Deut. 6:5; Lev. 19:18; Mt. 22:35-40). • He then asked another question, “Who is my neighbor?” which prompted Jesus to tell a parable about the “Good Samaritan” (Lk. 10:30-37). • At the end of the parable, when the man answered correctly who the neighbor was, Jesus told him, “Go and do the same” (“Go, and be a neighbor!”). "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  3. Intro May 19th, 2014 – The Funny River Horse Trail Wildfire Over 190,000 Acres burned! Over 700 Firefighters! Houses Evacuated! "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  4. Intro The community responded to the firefighters and the evacuees in an amazing way! Signs all over thanking the Firefighters! Despite the fire, there was joy to be found in living in such a generous community! Donations turned away! "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  5. Intro The owner of the lodge/saloon continually praised God and thanked Him on social media for the blessings donated to her for the evacuees! Mt. 5:44-45 44. "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45. so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. • Mt. 5:45 • God causes the sun to shine and rain to fall on both the good and evil. • Thankfulness (gratitude) is a universal trait, and can be expressed by both the godly and ungodly, but how much more so should gratitude be given by the righteous? • Ingratitude is a sin, and the righteous ought to be characterized by gratitude. Often times, part of being thankful is being a neighbor! "Who Is My Neighbor?"

Ingratitude • The owner of the lodge/saloon thanked God and those in • the community for their donations • If saints have not been thankful or been a neighbor, to hear it from the ungodly ought to shame us for being slack in our character Ingratitude: Being unthankful, unappreciative • Characterized by: • The wicked, or evil persons – II Tim. 3:1-5: Especially note Vs. 2. • The Gentiles as a whole – Rom. 1:21-22: Failed to thank God. • Selfishness – II Tim. 3:2; Phil. 2:3-4: Looking out only for self! • Complaining spirit – I Cor. 10:10; Num. 16 (Korah’s Rebellion) "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  7. Ingratitude • Manifested towards: • Parents – Mt. 15:1-6 Mt. 15:5-6 5. "But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother, "Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God," 6. he is not to honor his father or his mother.' And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. • Others: Gen. 40:9-15, 20-23; 41:9: Pharaoh’s Butler Gen. 41:9 (NKJ) 9. Then the chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying: "I remember my faults this day. • God – Rom. 1:21 Rom. 1:21 21. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Ingratitude is a trait of the wicked – not to be in the hearts of the children of God! "Who Is My Neighbor?"

Gratitude • Signs all over the community thanked the firefighters for • their efforts to contain the fire! • If saints have not been thankful or been a neighbor, to hear it from the ungodly ought to shame us for being slack in our character Gratitude: Being thankful, appreciative • Characterized by: • Humility – Lk. 17:15-16 • Praising God and giving thanks – Lk. 17:16 Col. 3:17 (Eph. 5:20; Col. 1:12) 17. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  9. Gratitude • Should be manifested towards: • Parents – Eph. 6:2-3 Eph. 6:2-3 2. HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise), 3. SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH. • Others – I Tim. 2:1-2 I Tim. 2:1-2 1. First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2. for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. • Brethren – Phil. 1:3-6; II Thess. 1:3 II Thess. 1:3 3. We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater; "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  10. Gratitude • Should be manifested towards: • God – I Thess. 5:17-18 I Thess. 5:17-18 17. pray without ceasing; 18. in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. A thankful heart will keep us from becoming “ungrateful! "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  11. “Go and Be a Neighbor!” • The owner of the lodge/saloon said when she posted their • needs on social media, within 10 minutes they were • having to turn people away (their needs were met in full)! • The community came out in droves to help out those who had to flee their homes, and also poured out their means to help the firefighters Lk. 10:27: The Law said, “Love God…and neighbor as yourself” • Lk. 10:29: The lawyer’s response to the Law was “Who is • My neighbor?” • In other words, “Who do I have to love?” The Jews would not have included the Gentiles and would debate this question indefinitely. • Lk. 10:36: Jesus’ concluding question, “Which man was a • neighbor?” • Jesus didn’t point out who was the neighbor, but asked who proved to be one. "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  12. “Go and Be a Neighbor!” • Lk. 10:37: The lawyer knew, “The one who showed mercy • toward him” • Meaning: the one who made himself a neighbor • The two attitudes contrasted: • The lawyer: “Who do I have to love?” (Who is my neighbor?”) • The Samaritan: “How can I be a neighbor?” • The contrast is evident in lives today: • Some look for and expect somebody to drop by, ask them out, bring them food, visit them in the hospital, etc. • Others are doing these things! Jesus said, “Go and be a neighbor!” (Lk. 10:37: “Go and do the same!”) "Who Is My Neighbor?"

Conclusion • Mk. 8:6-7: We ought to follow the example of Jesus! • (He gave thanks!) • Col. 2:6-7; Phil. 4:19: Following Christ, we can be thankful for the things in life that He has allowed us to enjoy! (Js. 1:17) • Ingratitude is usually a trait of the wicked! (Rom. 1:21; II Tim. 3:2) So when the ungodly give thanks and praise God, it ought to remind saints of the attitude that we are to have: Thankfulness! Col. 2:6-7 6. Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7. having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. Phil. 4:19 19. And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  14. Conclusion • Eph. 5:19-20: Saints are told we are to be “always giving • thanks for all things” to God! (Col. • Thankfulness is a trait of the faithful! (Eph. 5:3-4, 19-20; Col. 3:12-17) Eph. 5:19-20 19. speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20. always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; • Lk 10:25-37: Called the story of the “Good Samaritan” • It is really the parable of who is a neighbor! • To be a neighbor often requires sacrifice of some kind: goods, time, resources, etc. • The lawyers quibbled about the law. • The priests and Levites went through the motions of religion, without compassion. (Mt. 9:13: Jesus said He desires compassion over sacrifice) • The Samaritan “got involved.” (Showed compassion, was a neighbor) So when the ungodly act as neighbors, it ought to remind saints to do as Jesus said: “Go and do the same!” "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  15. Conclusion Have you ever asked, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus said to go be a neighbor! (In like fashion of the Samaritan who showed mercy) "Who Is My Neighbor?"

  16. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child of God: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
