What have we done since last year? Following further work by our Youth Worker/PSE Action Group we responded to the SHRN report with ... Breakfast Club continues Fruit now also available in small bags Energy drinks are banned PE clubs run every lunchtime New picnic benches have been created from old fixed seating to encourage sitting outside
We have just received £84,000 from Sustrans to create safe routes to school, including cycle shelters and a wonderful Dragon at the entrance to the school site in collaboration with Arts Connection. Peer Support continues to be successful The Hub is open all day and at lunchtime we are busy playing games or doing workshops, ie. Self-esteem, the importance of sleep, worries, Bullying – we respond immediately with restorative approach
Other documents I researched - ‘Strategies for schools to improve attendance and manage lateness’ ‘Keeping learners safe’ ‘Qualified for Life’ ‘Families First’’ To name but a few .. I came up with the idea of an area where we could support the whole school from one central base. This is known as The Hub.
The Hub acts as a ‘first responder’ to any given situation in school .. Whether it be a missing PE kit, a message needing to be delivered to a student, First Aid or a plea for help with a college application, we support the whole school with resources and advice, referrals and guidance on any given subject.
We look after isolated students and help them to reflect on their choices and provide support to help them move forward The Hub is unique in that we know all our visitors - their backgrounds and their needs. There is no need for explanations, we provide a non-judgemental support service.
If we are unable to provide the appropriate support, we signpost to external agencies such as Youth Worker, YIS, Xenzone, CareersWales, School Nurse etc. These are all part of our wider pastoral support team and many base themselves in the Hub between appointments.
We provide physical resources to diffuse sources of anxiety, such as revision materials, hot water bottles for tummy aches, ice packs for sprains, tissues, safety pins, recycled water bottles, spare stationery, fidget spinners, stress balls, … the list is endless and most importantly we LISTEN and we make judgements on what is the real reason behind these requests for help as sometimes students are just testing the water to see if we really care .. and we do.
