  2. GandHi and Peaceful Protest • Gandhi popularized the peaceful protest movement. • Britain owned India at the time, and Gandhi and most Indians wanted to be their own country. • This put India’s own ‘Civil Rights Movement’ into action. • Many tactics and ideas were inspired by Gandhi and his actions.

  3. Jim Crow Laws • The Jim Crow Laws were a set of laws that were used in Southern and Border states. • These laws put restrictions on all colored people. • Because of these laws, segregation became very prominent in these states. • Things like having different water fountains and different sections of restaurants existed. • The laws stated that these conditions must be ‘Separate but Equal’, however this was not the case.

  4. Warren Court • The Warren Court started off with the Brown vs Board of education. This was their first case dealing with the civil rights movement. • The Warren Court proved the Jim Crow Laws unconstitutional, claiming that their ‘Separate but equal’ conditions did not exist. • Brown vs. Board of education was the case that overturned the Plessy vs. Ferguson.

  5. Little rock nine • Little Rock Nine was the nick name for a case in Little Rock, Arkansas when Little Rock’s high school, Central High, refused to allow nine African Americans into their school. • Governor OrvalFaubus had the National Guard block the nine kids from entering the school. • President Eisenhower heard of this and sent in Federal Troops to escort the kids into the school. • The nine kids were: Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Dr. Terrance Roberts, Carlotta Walls Lanier, MinnijeanBrown Trickey, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed-Wair, Melba PattilloBeals.
