  1. HOW TO LIGHT AND TURN OFF THE OXY-ACETYLENE TORCH

  2. Safety First

  3. Compressed Gas • DO NOT EXPOSE CYLINDERS TO HEAT OR PHYSICAL SHOCK BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN COMPRESSED GAS AND COULD EXPLODE

  4. Flammable Material • DO NOT BURN ENYTHING OTHER THAN THE METAL TO BE JOIND, THIS INCLUDES PEOPLE • WATCH THAT THE HEATED METAL DOES NOT BURN ANYTHING OR ANYONE

  5. Oxidizing Material • OXYGEN IS AN OXIDIZING MATERIAL THAT INCREASES THE RISK OF FIRE IF IT COMES IN CONTACT WITH COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS.

  6. Safety Stuff You’ll Be Glad You Know • ALWAYS WHERE EYE AND SKIN PROTECTION • ALWAYS HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER READY • ALWAYS REMOVE LIGHTER OR MATCHES FROM WELDING AREA • ALWAYS USE THE EQUIPMENT IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA • A 30% CONCENTRATION OF ACETYLENE FOR 4 MINUTES CAN PUT YOU INTO COMA. • MIXTURES OF ACETYLENE AND AIR, CONTAINING FROM 2 TO 80% ACETYLENE BY VOLUME, WILL EXPLODE WHEN IGNITED. • ACETYLENE SHOULD NEVER BE USED AT PRESSURES EXCEEDING 15 PSI. • TO ASSURE SAFETY, DAMAGE TO ANY OF THE EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE TEACHER IMMEDIATELY

  7. Oxy-acetylene Equipment

  8. OVERVIEW The process consists of these three main parts: • preparing the torch for lighting • lighting and adjusting the torch • turning off the torch

  9. PREPARING THE TORCH FOR LIGHTING • Pressurize the regulators • Turn both regulators to the off position

  10. PREPARING THE TORCH FOR LIGHTING • Pressurize the regulators • Slowly turn the oxygen cylinder valve counter clockwise and the acetylene valve clockwise just enough to allow the gas to pressurize the regulators. (see Figure: 3)

  11. PREPARING THE TORCH FOR LIGHTING • Purge the lines: • Turning the regulators pressure adjusting screws clockwise up to ten pounds one at a time, allowing the gas to escape for five to ten seconds and then off a gain.

  12. lighting and adjusting the flame

  13. 2 lighting and adjusting the flame • 2.1Adjusting to correct working pressure: • Turn the acetylene needle valve on the torch one turn • Turn the acetylene regulator up to 3 p.s.i. • Close the acetylene at the handle • Do the same with the oxygen up to 5 p.s.i.

  14. Turning on and lighting the flame • Open the acetylene needle valve no more than a ½ turn • Light the gas with the striker held about 1” away from the torch tip. • Adjust acetylene needle valve to a non-smoking flame

  15. Adjusting the flame • Slowly turn on the oxygen needle valve • Tune the flame with the oxygen needle valve to the desired type of flame.

  16. TURNING OFF THE TORCH • Turn the acetylene torch needle valve off first • Then turn the oxygen torch off. • Turn the cylinder valves off
