What is Jump$tart? Jump$tart is an organization dedicated to improving the financial literacy of America’s youth.
National Jump$tart Mission Jump$tart is a national coalition of organizations dedicated to improving the financial literacy of kindergarten through college-age youth by providing advocacy, research, standards and education resources. Jump$tart strives to prepare youth for life-long successful financial decision-making.
National Jump$tart Vision Personal finance is included in the education of all students. Jump$tart provides the collaboration needed to ensure this education.
National Jump$tart • Established in 1995 by the American Financial Services Association • Headquartered in Washington, DC • 501(c)(3) • www.jumpstart.org
State Coalitions • Because of each state’s uniqueness, there was a need for state coalitions. • National Jump$tart took a leadership role. • Each state has adopted National Jump$tart’s mission, standards and initiatives. • There are four Regional Directors to assist the state coalitions: Northeastern, Southeastern, Midwestern and Western.
The New Mexico Coalition Our New Mexico Jump$tartCoalition is a non-profit organization made up of individuals and organizations representing business, government and education who have joined together to improve the personal financial literacy of New Mexico’s youth and young adults.
State Legislation • NM House Bill 1205 – 2007 • Sponsored by Antonio “Moe” Maestas • Requires that Financial Literacy be offered as an elective in high schools • NM House Bill 53 – 2010 • Sponsored by Jack E. Thomas • Financial Literacy course that meets state mathematics academic content and performance standards to be accepted as one of the four math credits needed for high school graduation
The New Mexico Coalition Goals • To raise awareness of personal financial literacy • To enhance professional development of New Mexico educators on financial literacy issues • To increase personal financial education in schools, homes and community organizations • To create a statewide clearinghouse for financial literacy education resources
NM Jump$tart Events • Co-sponsored Summit on Financial Education in April of 2007 and 2008 • Sponsored Free Teachers’ Workshop in Albuquerque April 30, 2009 • Sponsored Free Teachers’ Workshop in Las Cruces January 29, 2010
