  3. Early History • 1992 IBM Simon • Calendar, address book, calculator and other • 1996 Nokia 9000 • Qwerty keyboard • E-mail and web browser • 1997 Ericsson created the term ‘smartphone’

  4. Recent Developments • 2000: Ericsson developed touchscreen • 2001: Kyrocera 6035 – first in US to become widespread • 2002: Ericsson added a camera • Early 2000’s – Palm and BlackBerry added phone capability.

  5. 2007, The iPhone • Initially costly ($499) • One of the first to be controlled through a touchscreen without a stylus. • 2008: App Store was launched – huge success • 2011: iPhone 4 through Verizon Wireless developed along with Wi-Fi hotspots.
