Tapping Into Prior Knowledge – Writing to Learn What are the different areas of health? What do you remember about mental / emotional health, the one we will be discussing in the next few weeks?
Mental and emotional health review Mental and emotional health deal with your feelings about yourself, how well you meet the demands of daily life, and your ability to process information.
Characteristics of Good Mental/Emotional Health • A chartfor the 6 different characteristics of mental/emotional health has been provided for you. • On the chart, you will record • (1) the definition, • (2) the benefits of having each characteristic • (3) personal information
Sense of Belonging • Belonging means having an emotional attachment to family members, friends, teachers, and other people around you • Belonging provides comfort and assurance promoting stability and confidence • Your personal sense of belonging…(answer the following questions in a complete sentence) • One adult that you trust and you are attached to • Two other people who are important to you and who you are important to Rate and Write
Sense of Purpose • Sense of purpose means that you recognize your own value and importance • A sense of purpose enables you to set and achieve goals and engage in activities that are personally rewarding • Your personal sense of purpose: (answer in complete sentences) • One short term goal that you have • One long term goal that you have • Identify an activity that you are involved in OR a responsibility that you fulfill on a regular basis OR a job that you have – etc. Rate and Write
Positive Outlook • Having a positive outlook means that you are able to see the bright side of things and that you have hope for the future • Having hope, a positive outlook, reduces your stress, increases your energy and promotes success • Your personal positive outlook level • Are you an optimist or a pessimist? • Name one area which you know you feel negatively about • Name one area in your life that you feel very positively about Rate and Write
Autonomy • Autonomy means having the confidence to make choices for your own life • Autonomy creates a sense of independence • Your personal level of autonomy: • Name an area in your life where you are making decisions and practicing autonomy • Name an area in your life where you wish you had more autonomy or decision making power Rate and Write
Personal Consistency • Personal consistency means that you live according to your values, beliefs and convictions • Personal consistency increases self-respect and self-esteem • Your personal values – what’s important to you and how you want to live your life : • 2 internal values (Ex. Integrity, kindness, respect) • 1 external value (Ex. Environment, family, possessions) Rate and Write
Positive Self-Esteem • Positive self-esteem is all about how you “feel” about yourself • Individuals with positive self esteem are able to accept challenges and take the future in-stride • Your level of self-esteem – most of the time: - One thing you do well - One thing you like about yourself - One thing you would like to change Rate and Write
Acting Out 6 Volunteers Each of you will be given a “characteristic” of positive mental and emotional health. Either on your own, or with the help of 1 or 2 classmates, act out the characteristic. The class will guess.
Signs of Good Mental/Emotional Health • Activity: • Each table will get an envelope with the 6 characteristics and 12 specific behaviors • As a group discuss each behaviorand decide which characteristic it would best fit under – place it under the characteristic heading • After you have categorized them, record them on your information chart • Use a (+) if it is a behavior you engage in the majority of the time. Use a (–) if it is a behavior you rarely engage in. Use a (+/- ) if you engage in the behavior about half the time.
Checking for understanding • Pair up with a partner who has a similar story • Read the success story out loud together or silently • Identify the how the person demonstrated each of the positive characteristics
Self-Evaluation • Examine your personal mental and emotional health • Complete the assignment on the back of your content map.

How Can I Improve My Self-Esteem? Reading: How Can I Improve My Self-Esteem Inserted into the reading are questions or activities for you to complete. By making a text personal you also make it memorable.
Improving or Enhancing Self-Esteem Go through the step-by-step process of setting a goal. Maybe your goal can include one of the other steps for improving self-esteem. Take another look at the suggestions in the reading on self-esteem.

Needs • Individually read pages 172 – 173 • Reaction Writing • Explain the concept of a hierarchy as it relates to a person’s “needs” Share with your table mates
Group Activity • Fold a piece of paper in half. Draw the hierarchy in the middle and label it – don’t make it too small! • Label the right side of your sheet healthy behaviors. • Label the left side unhealthy behaviors. • As you go through the list – decide which level the behavior addresses and whether it is healthy or unhealthy

Read and write • Read the paragraph, Meeting Your Needs, on page 174 • Write a paragraph summary in your notes / reaction writing sheet.
Read the story “Changes of Heart” Consider the following: What needs were not being met in Marcy’s life prior to entering the correctional facility? What needs did Marcy meet in a negative or unhealthy way? How were Marcy and Spiker’s lives similar? What needs did Marcy have met by participating in the dog training program?
Check for Understanding • What is the big idea that your health teacher wanted you to take away from the lesson on needs? • Draw the hierarchy, label each level. By each level write down one thing that you do to meet that need level in a healthy way.
Temperament Sorter • GUARDIAN • ARTISAN • IDEALIST • RATIONAL • Take the Temperament Sorter and consider the following: How much impact does our personality have on all areas of life?
Personality Read pages 175 – 177 Consider the following: What does my personality have to do with my mental and emotional health and how I meet my needs? Critical Thinking: What are the primary influences in my life that have helped shape my personality? Or do they influence me because of my personality? Which theory do you find to be more accurate, the Temperament Sorter or the Glenco Health text philosophy?
Big Questions – On Big Paper • How does personality impact health and wellness? • Identify 3 key points for each area – work with people who have different personalities… offering different perspectives. • How can understanding your personality benefit your wellness?
Emotional Health: Note-taking Directions: Read the text on pages 185 -190 • Take notes on the 5 strategies for communicating emotions and needs in a healthy way. • What could be the benefits of taking time to reflect before responding to a strong emotion.
