Conservation by Design… Skip Intro
Protection … The photograph below illustrates a typical archive, books, documents and artefacts stored on shelving. All would benefit from being stored in an archival box or folder. This can be achieved by using KASEMAKE CXD, an in-house manufacturing system for the production of phase boxes, archival boxes, folders, wallets etc. The photograph above illustrates how documents can be stored by using the CXD system. The next few slides take you step by step through the process of making phase boxes the fast, accurate and easy way, the KASEMAKE-CXD way.
Book Measure … Using the simple interface, enter information such as Archive Number, material and style…
Book Measure… Size data is automatically entered into the system. Place the book on to the measuring area. Using the measuring tablet identify the Width, Height and Spine of the book. Data can be stored locally or saved onto a central server for further processing.
Database… Within the KASEMAKE Software, the measured jobs are imported into the integral database, automatically creating a records for each individual item. Jobs waiting to be boxed using a specific board type (such as 1000 micron archival boxboard) can all be found in the database by selecting a stored query. Operators can also run their own customised queries if required.
Sheet fill… The Fill Sheet command is then used to fill the blank sheet with designs from the job database. It tells the software where the list of box styles is stored, as well as other information, like the spacing between boxes, whether they can be rotated for better fit and so on… The command then checks the list of jobs in the database for the first job that will fit into the sheet and loads the correctly sized box design automatically.
Sheet fill… The operator can choose to skip a box design and go to the next in the database list, or accept the design. They can also rotate the box for a better fit if required. This process is repeated until the sheet is full, or there are no more jobs available in the database. A complete sheet can be filled in a few seconds using this method, ready for cutting on the cutting machine… When the design has been accepted by the operator, the next job in the database that fits in the available remaining space is found and inserted automatically.
Sheet fill… As the software loads the box design, text from the database can be placed automatically onto the box (for example the book title, archive reference number and so on) Also an overview identifying text can be shown on the box on the software screen. This is just so the operator can view it easily to identify the design, it does not have to be plotted onto the box.
Standard Styles… Here are a selection of designs of boxes and folders, developed for and by conservators, and supplied as standard in the KASEMAKE-CXD software. There are many more delivered with the system 01 Standard 16 Box Folder 17 Corner 29 Slide Cabinet 02 Master 03 PB01
Cutting Table… KASEMAKE-CXD Cutting Systems, they do all the hard work for you. • KM Cutting Tables • Multi-function tooling options • Wide range of sizes • Heavy duty • Built for the industry • Styled for the studio • Global service and support
Cutting Table… Simply place the conservation board onto the table. Tell the system to begin cutting and creasing, like using the Print command in a word processor.
Cutting Table… The cutting table does the rest. The sample is cut and creased to the exact size. The quality is always high.
Folding… The box is ready to fold and use straight away. A job that might take hours to make by hand is ready in minutes.
Customers… The Lancashire Record Office. Sue Tobutt of the Lancashire Record Office shows how books and documents used to be stored. Sue Tobutt showing how it is today, all books and documents safely boxed and clearly labelled.
