Explanations of Forgetting: AMNESIA
Lesson Objective: • To understand how brain damage can affect memory.
Retrograde Amnesia • Where the patient will be unable to recall events that happened before the amnesia developed. • May affect specific classes of memory. E.g. A pianist may remember what a piano is but not remember how to play
Anterograde Amnesia • The loss of memory of what happens after the amnesia develops. • Most patients lose the ability to recall facts. E.g. They remember how to use a phone and ride a bike but cannot remember what they have just said or what they have eaten earlier that day.
Russell and Nathan (1946) • 22 year old patient • Fell from motor bike and suffers severe concussion • X-Ray shoes no fracture of the scull • He could not recall any events that had happened two years before the event.
Case Study of HM • He had been suffering epileptic fits since he was 16. • At 27 he underwent radical surgery to try to cure his epilepsy. • His hippocampus was removed . • He was left with anterograde amnesia. • His memory of events prior to the suregry was near normal but he could not remember anything after
He was unable to find his bedroom in the hospital • He could not recognise the doctors and nurses • H.M’s short term memory was normal; he could retain information for about 15 seconds without rehearsal and longer with rehearsal • He could not transfer information into his long term memory,
In Your Groups • Conduct a role-play to act out what happened to H.M. Before and after the surgery. • Or • Write a song to a familiar tune to describe the H.M Case study.
