Iraqi Government • Parliamentary democracy as of 2010 • 325 Members of the Council of Representatives of Iraq chose the Prime Minster and President • Elections were just held on March 7, 2010
deBa’athification of Iraq • The Ba’ath party has been outlawed in Iraq this past week. • There are still people loyal to Saddem Hussein’s political party. • Ba’athists have been banned because that group has killed millions of people.
Disbanding the Iraqi Military • The Iraqi Army was re-instated in 2006 after being disbanded by the US Army in 2003. • In 2008 the Iraqi Army launched its first operation. • Iraqi Army is ready to take over so Americans can leave. • The size of the Iraqi Army is about 970,000 troops. • The Army has 17 divisions.
Troop Levels and Withdrawal • The amount of US troops in Iraq have dropped below 100,000 for the first time since 2003. • All troops will be removed except 50,000 troops by August 31, 2010. • The rest of the troops should be out by the end of next year 2011.
2008 Election • Barack Obama wants to remove one to two brigades a month from Iraq. • Wants all troops out in 16 months. • John McCain wants to have a victory in Iraq first and then worry about bringing the troops home. • He believes that an early withdrawal could hurt the Iraqi people.
