  3. Revision Book of Jonah is an historical account written approx 800 years before Jesus Jonah is recorded as a prophet to the nation of Israel in 2 Kings 14:25 Jesus himself refers to Jonah as an historical prophet in Matthew 12 & 16 and in Luke 11

  4. Revision Chapter 1 – Jonah is called by God to go to Nineveh Modern day Nineveh would be in Mosul (Iraq) God pursues him as he runs Chapter 2 - Jonah sinks to the very bottom of the sea where the roots of the mountains find their origin

The Mission of God Part Three - Jonah 3:1-10 Observation 1 The Mission of God is carried out by the Messengers of God Not only does God pursue us but he is also pursuing the City Wyndham Jonah 3:1-2 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: "Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”

Now Nineveh was a very important city—a visit required three days.” Nineveh is about 900km from the coast

Now Nineveh was a very important city—a visit required three days.”

He proclaimed: "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned." The Hebrew for “overturned” = [haw-vak'] 1. tumble - retire - sack - disconnect 2. change – transform - convert 1Corinthians 1:27“But God chose the foolish things of this world to put the wise to shame. He chose the weak things of this world to put the powerful to shame.”(CEV) God is a master and skilful worker

  9. The Mission of God Part Three - Jonah 3:1-10 Observation 3 The truthfulness of the Word of God does not rest in the messenger but in the message itself Jonah 3:5-6 “The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.” Dust is a symbol of origin

Jonah 3:7-8 “Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh: "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.” Genesis 1:27“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” “A Self Salvation Project is birthed on bringing ourselves to a better place on our own terms, in our own time and by our own means” Pastor Adam Sinnett (Mars Hill Church)

The Mission of God Part Three - Jonah 3:1-10 Observation 5 Do you have a sense of urgency? vs.8“Let everyone call urgently on God” Jonah 3:7-8 “Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh: "By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.” Psalms 39:5“You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath.” 1Peter 1:23-25"All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.” also read Isaiah 40:6-8 Our life is a vapour Heaven is real Hell is real

  12. The Mission of God Part Three - Jonah 3:1-10 Observation 5 Do you have a sense of urgency? vs.8“Let everyone call urgently on God” Jonah 3:9-10 “Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.” Jude 1: 21-23“Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. Be merciful to those who doubt; snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.”
