  1. Presidents and Their Dogs By Annika Benson

  2. Presidents and Their Dogs The White House has been home to not only presidents but also dogs. 32 of the 44 presidents had dogs as pets. The White House has been home to all kinds of animals including: birds, hamsters, bears, lions, goats, and even an alligator. Dogs have been the most popular pet in the White House. There may have been more dogs in the White House as residents than humans. Most presidents came to the White House with a dog but some were given dogs as a gift when they became president.

  3. Calvin Coolidge Calvin Coolidge was the 30th president of the USA. He said “any man who does not like dogs and want them about does not deserve to be in the White House.” He loved animals of all kinds. He owned many breeds of dogs, a hippo, a bear, and a raccoon named Rebecca. Calvin Coolidge may have been our first President animal hoarder.

  4. Franklin D. Roosevelt Franklin D. Roosevelt’s favorite dog was a Scottie named Fala. Almost everywhere he went, he brought Fala. She went with him on vacation, rode with him in his limo, and slept with him at night . He trained her to stand on her hind legs for the Star Spangled Banner. Fala was buried next to Roosevelt when she died.

  5. John F. Kennedy John F. Kennedy had 14 dogs. This was the most of any president. President Kennedy liked to have all of his dogs come meet him when his helicopter landed at the White House. His most famous dog was Pushinka. She was the baby of Soviet space dog Strelka. She was a gift from a Soviet Union leader.

  6. Barack Obama Barack Obama is our president now. He wanted to rescue a mutt but couldn’t because his daughter Malia was allergic to dogs, so they had to get a hypoallergenic dog that didn’t shed. They got a portuguese water dog. They named their dog Bo. B for Barack and O for Obama.

  7. Closing I learned about different presidents and the dogs they have owned. Dogs have been the most popular pet in the White House. If I meet the president of the United States I would feel very nervous and scared. But then I would feel better because I learned presidents like dogs just like me.
