Folk Tales “The iEARN Folk Tales project enables students to go global using the Internet, sharing their ideas with students from around the world. Just as important, it gives opportunities for reflection on the lessons and morals of local and national folktales, stories told down through the generations as a way to pass along lessons that still have much to teach students today” (Saleem Ibrahim, iEARN-Pakistan). Holiday Cards Exchange “The 7 and 8 year old students created their own personal Christmas cards to share with students in China, England, Australia, Romania and England and New York. One Day In the Life Students describe a day in their life. In addition to written descriptions, students are invited to share visual images of their days through the "A Day in the Life: Photo Diaries," a digital photography exchange in which students share captioned photographs about their own lives. Students accompany each digital photograph with a short, written explanation of what is depicted in the photograph and its significance. Teddy Bear “The Teddy Bear project has changed my professional life. My students hated writing. That’s why I am so happy now: my students ARE EAGER TO WRITE because they have somebody in some part of the world who will read what they write! We have partner schools in Pakistan, Russia, Argentina and Australia. We love the forum! Daffodil & Tulip Classrooms around the world choose Daffodil and/or Tulip bulbs to plant during the same week in November. The project fosters to develop appreciation of geography and culture among students since they will be learning about the other parts of the world as the students share their similar projects. The ultimate goal of the project is to promote building connections between students and their teachers, considering what affects plant growth, and peace! “(OF)2: Our Footprints, Our Future!”is an international initiative that encourages youth from around the world to use online tools and resources to measure their carbon footprint and develop ways to reduce their carbon usage. The goal of this project is for one million students to work together to collectively reduce their (CO)2 emissions by 35,000 tons in one year, reducing global warming. On May 20th 2005, 45,000 kites soared into the air throughout Israel, and 5,000 more in Jordan, in London, in Mexico City and in 12 cities in North America, representing the high point of a unique project. The kites flew as a massive tribute dedicated to advancing the cultural and social dialog, a symbol of bridging the gap and understanding the “other”. Measurable Outcomes … through iEARN, my students collaborated with students from Orman School in Cairo, Egypt, in a media literacy unit …. As US troops closed in on Baghdad, students from both countries shared articles, photos and news clips from their respective regions. They found a much wider spectrum of viewpoints and coverage than they had anticipated. Being pushed to verify facts as reported by news sources, students on both sides of the ocean experienced first hand the need for critical thinking and active inquiry.
