Underline them. How is it different from other versions you have heard? **What deeper meaning do you think some of these key words may have?

  2. With your partner, choose & brainstorm the meanings of two of these phrases ready to present. Match the meanings on your cards to the phrases, and write the phrases & meanings out in your books. The Spirit is the active power here: - the real battle of the gospel is between invisible, spiritual forces, not just human opponents. • Driven out • Forty days • Satan and the wild animals • Angels God testing faith to prove loyalty A long time Jesus like a new Moses, preparing true teaching? Wild animals=demons. ferocity represents the seriousness of the temptation. angels are the other active “doers” in this scene (alongside Satan & the Spirit). As God’s messengers, they represent God’s help and protection (from the wild animals)

Importance of Temptations for Christians Importance of Temptations for Jesus • Who is Jesus: Proof of unique status of Jesus as Son of God, capable of defeating evil. • Hope & Encouragement: for persecuted Christians - knowing that Jesus is Son of God and has authority over evil. Also that his teaching is true teaching from God, not infected by evil. • Part of following Jesus: in Lent, Christians pray and fast to defeat evil in their own lives, with God’s help, as disciples of Jesus. He was now ready to start his ministry, knowing he had triumphed over the temptations of evil: • reinforcing status as Son of God, who alone can defeat evil • Confirming his authority and power to cast out Satan wherever he goes. Why was triumphing over the devil important for Jesus? 2 reasons. Why is it important for Christians that he triumphed? 2 reasons. **Why do people fast for Lent? Which of the reasons do they do it for?
