TRUSSES. There are three different types of trusses. Each dissipates and transfers loads in a slightly different way. Each type has strengths and weaknesses. The Warren Truss. The Warren truss uses a basic triangular shape. For smaller spans, no vertical members are used.

TRUSSES There are three different types of trusses. Each dissipates and transfers loads in a slightly different way. Each type has strengths and weaknesses.
The Warren Truss • The Warren truss uses a basic triangular shape. • For smaller spans, no vertical members are used. • For larger spans, vertical members are added. • Warren trusses are used for spans between 50 m and 100 m.
The Pratt Truss • A Pratt truss system uses diagonal members that slant down and in. • The diagonal members handle tension forces only. • Vertical members are added to handle compressive forces.
The Howe Truss • A Howe truss system is the opposite of the Pratt truss system. • The diagonal members slant up and in. • The diagonal members handle compressive forces. • Since there is nothing to handle the tension forces, Howe trusses are the least desirable of the three systems discussed.
