Hot Topic: Curbing Unlicensed & Unpermitted Work The HBA and the Remodelers Council continue to take the lead in this critical concern for our community. We have partnered with the area’s building department staff, code enforcement, law enforcement and the State Attorney’s office – each of which help to enforce the unlicensed and unpermitted work going on everyday. We encourage everyone to be aware and report any suspicious activity, such as a lack of posted permits or permit board, unusual trucks coming and going, dumpsters set on or near a home site, work being done off hours and on weekends, etc. These are some of the tell tale signs of work being down without a permit or by an unlicensed contractor. SPECIAL NOTE: Please be aware that if you want to report suspected illegal construction activity ANONYMOUSLY you will need to tell the person you are calling that you do NOT want to be identified. If you fail to make that known during your call, there is a good chance that your name and number will become public record. BE CAUTIOUS, but be vigilant in continuing to help curb this problem. SponsorshipOpportunities Available! at FHBA Scores Big Victory by Streamlining Permitting… Among its many 2012 legislative successes, the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA) counts among the biggest the passage of House Bill 503, which brought significant cost-savings for developers through the streamlining of the state’s environmental permitting system. Developer savings typically translate into lower-priced building lots and more affordable housing for Florida’s home buyers. Sponsored by Rep. Jimmy Patronis (R-Panama City) with the companion bill sponsored by Sen. Mike Bennett (R-Bradenton), HB 503 was signed by Governor Rick Scott as part of his ongoing commitment to reduce regulations on Florida businesses. The bill covers a variety of streamlining measures that include shortening the time frames to receive a permit, extending the duration of certain permits, expediting inland port permits, lowering the jobs threshold for expedited permits, and expanding the use of internet-based self-certification services for certain exemptions and general permits. • Inshore Division • Offshore Division • Kayak Division • Kids Tournament • Cornhole Tournament An important provision in the bill for the building industry prohibits a state agency or local government from conditioning the approval for a development permit, after July 1, 2012, on an applicant obtaining a permit or approval from any other local, state or federal agency, thus eliminating the unnecessary, time-consuming and costly practice of state agencies or local governments. Nationwide housing affordability hit a new record high in the first three months of this year, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index. The affordability record was also broken during the previous quarter. According to the Housing Opportunity Index, 77.5 percent of all new and existing homes that were sold during first quarter of this year were affordable to families who earned the national median income of $65,000. During the last quarter of 2011, 75.9 percent of homes sold were affordable to people who earned the median income. The builders association says that overly tight lending rules keep many people from taking advantage of the housing deals.
