Introduction • Kohl’s footprint spans much of the United States, with 1,146 stores in 49 states at FYE 2012. • Kohl’s operates stores in three formats: prototype (88,000 gross square feet of retail space, which serve trade areas of 150,000-200,000 people); small (55,000-68,000 gross square feet, which serve trade areas of 100,000-150,000); and urban (125,000 gross square feet, which serve trade areas of up to 500,000; currently in New York and Chicago).
