Resources in America Unit Portfolio Presentations Rebecca Van Wagoner
Unit Overview Students will use technology and other resources to find facts about resources in America. Students will be grouped into 5 groups each dealing with a particular part of America and they will research that specific area to find what the main resources are in that area and how they benefit America as a whole. Once the students present their information about certain areas, all groups will collaborate to find a solution to the problem of over-using our resources.
Curriculum-Framing Questions • Essential Questions: • How can knowing about resources around you help better your knowledge of the world around you? • What can you do to help the environmental problems we have today? • Unit Questions: • How can I apply this new knowledge of resources to everyday life? • How can the use of resources affect your life in the future? • Content Questions: • What are the major resources used in West Virginia? The United States? • How did your use of technology help build your final project? • What changes can you do to help with using our resources wisely?
Vision for my Unit By creating this unit I hope to… • Open students minds to the large environmental problem of overusing our resources • Give students the opportunity to learn and become familiar with multiple forms of media through technology; I will incorporate my Web 2.0 tool along with websites for research and google docs to make charts for data. • Gain knowledge of using a PBL form of instruction During my unit, I want the students to… • Gain knowledge about the world around them. • Formulate ways to change and help the world around us. • Learn about technology to help in everyday life. • Learn how to make multi media presentations including a publication for their final summative assessement.
Project Approaches As my students work through the unit they will… • Collaborate in order to come to a final conclusion • Gain knowledge of the world around them • Make and present their findings of the resources used in a certain area in America • Connect with a real world problem
Connection to 21st –Century Learning • The students will use the Essential and Unit Questions to guide their procedures in finding out about resources around the world. • Communicate ideas between group mates and classmates. • Reflect on all their findings through technology, media, and other resources to find a common goal. • Be assessed using a rubric’s the class collaborated on as well as the teacher. • The students will be participating in Project based learning and showcase their knowledge through a publication along with a presentation.
Gauging students needs through assessment Purpose of Assessment: • I want my students to understand the requirements and the expectations of this assignment through collaboration of a rubric and by making my own rubric to gauge students learning. What I want to Learn from my Students: • I want to learn from my students that they understood and completed the Curriculum based questions and I want to know that they can complete assignments efficiently and based on rubrics. How I will promote higher-order thinking? • I will promote higher-order thinking by having students collaborate and come up with a class-wide solution for the problem of overusing our resources by looking at the research completed by the students. • How this assessment information can help my students in the future: • The assessment information will help my students in the future by encouraging them to make their own rubrics when there is not one present and also to know they can turn to collaboration when working on projects and they need to bounce ideas off one another. What feedback or ideas I would like: • I would like to see my students enjoying this project and encouraging me to make another one for them to complete.
My goals for this course • I want to learn how to properly implement technology into the classroom • I want to learn the best ways for using cooperative groups in the classroom through the use of project based learning. • I want to make a unit that will be compatible in my future classroom
My goals for my students • I want my students to feel comfortable in working with cooperative groups • I want my students to know how to use multiple forms of media to find a solution to a problem • I want my students to know and understand how to analyze data and put them into graphs
Request for feedback • New technologies to help better my students awareness of the problem of overusing our resources • Ideas on howto make this a fun unit and not bore the students with facts and data to analyze
