Chapter 5: Input CSC 151 Beth Myers Kristy Heller Julia Zachok
What is Input? Input is any data or instructions entered into the memory of a computer
Forms • Instructions entered into the computer can be in the form of programs, commands, and user responses • Data consists of a collection of unprocessed text, numbers, images, audio, or video
What are input devices? • Any hardware component that allows users to enter data or instructions into a computer
Input devices • Keyboard • Mouse • Stylus • Digital Pen • Microphone • Digital camera • Scanner
Keyboard • Input device that contains keys users press to enter data into the computer • 101 – 105 keys • Includes letters, numbers, punctuation marks, commands, toggle keys, and function keys
Pointing Devices • An input device that allows a user to control a pointer on the screen • Pointer – a small symbol on the screen whose location and shape change as a user moves a pointing device • Select text and graphics; move insertion point; click buttons, icons, links, and menu commands
Mouse • A pointing device that fits comfortably under the palm of your hand • Types • Optical mouse • Mechanical mouse • Cordless mouse
Trackball • A pointing device with a ball on its top and usually has one or more buttons that work as mouse buttons
Touchpad • A small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and motion • Touchpads are usually found on laptops
Pointing Stick • A pressure sensitive pointing device shaped like a pencil eraser that is positioned between keys on a keyboard • Pointing sticks are usually found on laptops
Joystick • A vertical lever mounted on a base; includes buttons called triggers
Wheel • Steering wheel type input device used to simulate driving • Includes foot pedals
Light Pen • A handheld input device that can detect the presence of light when pressed against the screen • Usually requires a special monitor
Touch Screen • A touch sensitive display device • Used for kiosks and ATM machines • Most PDAs, Tablet Screens and some Notebook Computers have touch screens
Stylus and Digital Pen • Looks like an ink pen but uses pressure to write text and draw lines • Originally called an electronic pen • Some have electronic erasers and programmable buttons
Voice Input • The process of entering data by speaking into a microphone • Voice Recognition is the computer’s capability of distinguishing spoken words
Audio Input • The process of entering any sound into the computer such as speech, music, and sound effects • The users input sound via devices such as microphones, tape players, CD/DVD, players, or radios
PDAs/Tablet PC • Personal Digital Assistant • Used with stylus • The Tablet PC is larger in comparison and uses a digital pen
Smart Phones • Users can send graphics, pictures, video clips, sound files, and text messages
Digital Cameras • Allows users to take pictures and store the photographed images digitally instead of on traditional film • Images can be immediately viewed • You can input these images onto your computer to edit and print
Video Input • The process of capturing full motion images into a computer and storing them on a medium such as a hard disk or DVD
PC Video Cameras/Web Cams • PC Video Cameras enable users to capture video and still images, send video with e-mail, add images to IM, make video telephone calls, and broadcast live on the Internet • Web Cams display output on a web page
Scanners • Light sensing input device that reads printed text and graphics and then translates the results into a form the computer can process • Four types are flatbed, pen, sheet-fed, and drum
Biometric Input • Biometrics – the technology of authenticating a person’s identity by verifying the personal characteristics • Fingerprints • Voice • Signatures • Eye patterns
